Community ContentNATICK — Since the doors opened in 1873, the Morse Institute Library has employed 12 Directors. Today Natick’s Town Administration and the Library’s Board of Trustees welcome its 13th director, Mikaela “Miki” Wolfe. I couldn’t be more excited to lead, learn, and grow with the Morse Institute Library and the Natick Community,” said Wolfe. We are especially pleased to charge Miki with leading the Morse Institute Library into our 150th Anniversary in 2023,” said Kathleen Donovan, Morse Institute Library Board of Trustees president. “We look forward to supporting Ms. Wolfe as she works to lead and expand the Morse Institute Library’s role as a valuable partner in the culture and community of Natick.”

Biden taps Suffolk DA Rachael Rollins to become state's top prosecutor
Biden announced Rollins as one of eight nominees to serve as U.S. attorneys. In 2018, Rollins topped a five-person Democratic primary for Suffolk DA with 39% of the vote, then took 80% of the vote in the general election. Baker, a Republican, would be responsible for selecting an interim Suffolk County district attorney to succeed Rollins until the 2022 election if she departs. He could tap a member of his own party — who did not have a candidate on the ballot last cycle — but such a move could rankle legislative leaders and many Suffolk County voters. Rollins' departure would require Boston voters to select a new district attorney in 2022, one year after they will choose a permanent mayor to serve a full term.

Former Framingham Parks Department employee's home burns. GoFundMe started
FRAMINGHAM — For 32 years, Linda Libby worked for the Framingham Parks Department before retiring last year. On June 29, Libby's mobile home in Sturbridge was destroyed in a fire, her sister Stella Bonin said. “It’s burned to the point there’s no way to repair it right now.”Bonin started a GoFundMe fundraiser for Libby. Bonin's goal is to raise $10,000 to help Libby pay for expenses that aren’t covered by insurance. She had recently returned to the Parks Department on a part-time basis, but has not worked since the fire.

Maryland man charged in slaying of transgender woman Taya Ashton
A Maryland man was arrested last week on suspicion of killing 20-year-old transgender woman Taya Ashton, who was shot to death in her Suitland apartment on July 18. Prince George’s County Police arrested DeAllen Price, 27, of District Heights, Maryland, charging him with first- and second-degree murder charges, as well as assault and gun charges. According to charging documents, detectives linked phone conversations between Ashton and Price on the night Ashton was murdered. At the time of his arrest, Price wore a Gucci bag, which Price George’s County investigators said matches the description of a bag missing from Ashton’s home. “There should be no rest in the LGBTQ community when something as tragic as this happens,” Budd said in a statement released shortly after news of Ashton’s death broke.

Michigan state board to review rejected initiative to protect LGBTQ residents from discrimination
The Michigan Board of State Canvassers plans to meet Monday to determine the fate of a petition-driven initiative to prohibit discrimination against LGBTQ people in Michigan.The Michigan Bureau of Elections rejected the initiative earlier this month, saying organizers failed to collect enough valid signatures. Fair and Equal Michigan collected about 299,000 signatures from registered voters, falling short of the 340,047 required for certification, according to the bureau. If the board sides with Fair and Equal Michigan, the initiative would be sent to the GOP-controlled Legislature.The group’s goal is to force state lawmakers to vote on expanding the state’s civil rights law to include a ban on discrimination against LGBTQ residents. Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination in housing and hiring based on religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status, and marital status. Gretchen Whitmer renewed their calls to amend the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act, but Republicans have balked at advancing the legislation.More than 20 states in the U.S. provide full protections from discrimination for LGBTQ people.

The average price for a gallon of unleaded gas in Massachusetts is $3.02
The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas sold in Massachusetts held steady this week at $3.02, according to AAA Northeast's weekly survey. This week's state average is 4 cents higher than it was a month ago ($2.98) and 88 cents higher than it was a year ago ($2.14). Massachusetts’ average gas price is 13 cents lower than the national average. AAA Northeast’s July 26 survey of fuel prices found the current national average to be 2 cents lower than last week ($3.17), averaging $3.15 a gallon. Today’s national average price is 6 cents higher than a month ago ($3.09), and 97 cents higher than this day last year ($2.18).

Lincoln-Sudbury graduate Robbie O'Connor commits to play baseball at Wake Forest
Last week, the 2021 Lincoln-Sudbury graduate and Daily News All-Star for baseball spent time in Winston-Salem, N.C. for an ID camp at Wake Forest University. For O'Connor, it came down to Wake Forest and Northeastern University, who had already come to watch him pitch during the spring season. What set Wake Forest apart from Northeastern for O'Connor, however, was the coaching staff and playing in one of the top college baseball conferences in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). "It really started with the coaches," O'Connor said. Lincoln-Sudbury baseball coach Matt Wentworth always tells his players to go to the place that is most comfortable for them.

Mass Pike bridge replacement completed at Woodland Road in Southborough
SOUTHBOROUGH — State officials announced that the replacement of the Interstate 90 (Mass Pike) eastbound bridge over Woodland Road was completed at 4 a.m. Monday. All lanes on the Mass Pike and Woodland Road are open for travel. Next on the list is replacement of the Pike's eastbound bridge over Cordaville Road (Rte. A detour under the bridge will begin at approximately 4 p.m. Friday and end at 5 a.m. next Monday. Thrive Support & Advocacy to help more with disabilities by expanding to Worcester
MARLBOROUGH – Thrive Support & Advocacy, a local nonprofit that empowers youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, will expand into Worcester in September to serve the city and its surrounding communities. The expansion is made possible by the opening of Thrive's new Worcester office at 100 Grove St. The organization is headed by President and CEO Sean Rose, who is also a Worcester city councilor. The yearlong, application-based program is designed for young adults between the ages of 17 and 25 who have an intellectual or developmental disability. Seven young adults have graduated from the initiative this summer.

Like Shier, Hawley’s selection by Harpoon makes sense because he is a PMC employee, holding down a job as director of provisions and logistics. Like many associated with the PMC, Hawley lost a loved one to cancer. The couple also helps organize the Natick PMC Kids Ride that has raised more than $500,000.

China blames U.S. for ‘stalemate’ in ties as talks begin
BEIJING (Reuters) -China blamed the United States on Monday for a “stalemate” in two-way ties, accusing it of creating an “imaginary enemy”, and setting a confrontational tone during a meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman. On Saturday, Wang had warned that China would not accept the United States taking a “superior” position in the relationship, a day after China announced sanctions on former U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and others.
