Egypt, Germany agree on development funds and grants worth 151 million euros for 15 projects
CAIRO – 18 August 2021: Egypt and Germany agreed on allocating soft development funds worth EUR 151.5 million from the German side to finance 15 development projects across sectors of technical education, vocational training, and innovation in the private sector, migration, labor, administrative reform, urban development, and renewable energy, according to Ministry of International Cooperation. The ministry added that this comes within the framework of the joint economic relations between Egypt and Germany, which aims to support Egypt’s Vision 2030 and its endeavors to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Moreover, 24 representatives from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ); the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy; the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety; the German Federal Foreign Office; the German Embassy in Cairo; the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ); and the KfW development bank. This is in addition to the EUR 240 million debt-swap program between Germany and Egypt. During the first half of 2021, 12 development financing agreements worth EUR 197 million were signed within the framework of the joint cooperation strategy with Germany across various priority sectors; pushing towards the achievement of both the local and global development targets.

In 6 years, value of Egypt's monetary subsidies program rises sixfold
Abdel Salam noted that the program is now operating in all villages and low-income neighborhoods. The program is "conditional", meaning that households receive a monthly transfer of LE 325 providing they are compliant with certain clearly defined requirements. The sessions help promote better child feeding practices, regular immunizations, and antenatal and postnatal care of women. Households are given additional support for every 0-6 year-old child (LE 60), primary stage student (LE 80), preparatory stage student (LE 100) and secondary stage students (LE 140). The program covers a maximum of 3 children per household and certifies beneficiaries every three years.

CAIRO – 17August 2021: The Qatari new Ambassador to Egypt, arrived Cairo on Tuesday to take over his duties after an absence of more than four years following the withdrawal of the ambassadors of Egypt and Qatar after the Arab Quartet crisis in mid-2017Ambassador Salem Mubarak Al Shafi, Qatar's new ambassador to Egypt, arrived in Cairo from Doha on Tuesday. Ambassador Hatem Al-Nashar, Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for Protocol Affairs, and members of the Qatari Embassy in Egypt received Al Shafi at Cairo Airport upon his arrival. The new Qatari ambassador to Egypt will present his credentials to senior Egyptian officials in the coming days in preparation for the official start of his work. Last June, Egypt and Qatar have agreed on settling all outstanding issues between the two countries during the coming stage, following the signing of "Al-Ula Declaration" on January 5, 2021, said Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Hafez. During a meeting held between Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani in Doha, the two ministers expressed satisfaction with the positive developments witnessed in the Egyptian-Qatari relations following the signing of ‘Al-Ula Declaration’, and agreed on the importance of moving forward in taking the necessary measures and procedures to build on what was achieved through operationalizing the various bilateral cooperation frameworks.

Lewandowski scores twice as Bayern beat Dortmund in Super Cup

Egypt faces up to US$1.9 mn in daily losses due to UK’s ‘Red List’ designation: WTTC
The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) warned that placing Egypt on the UK’s red list for travel could be causing economic losses of up to US1.9 million dollars per day. The warning came in a statement from the WTTC and is based on the council’s research of 2019 tourism levels. In June, the UK placed Egypt on the red list for travel, classifying it as a high-risk destination for coronavirus variants. The harsh designation has deterred many travelers from the UK from visiting Egypt. Elsewedy Electric records profits of LE 1.74B in H1 2021
CAIRO – 17 August 2021: Elsewedy Electric Company’s (SWDY) consolidated results showed a 70.58 percent increase in its profits during the first half of 2021, recording LE 1.74 billion, compared to LE 1.025 billion in the same period of 2020. The indicators showed that revenues increased to LE 26.01 billion, compared to LE 20.11 billion during 2020 period. As for standalone results, the company recorded profits of LE 55.97 million during 2021 period, compared to LE 2.15 billion during the six months of 2020. During the first nine months of 2020, El Sewedy Electric recorded a net profit of LE 769.49 million during the first quarter of 2021, compared to profits of LE 463.69 million during the first quarter of 2020, taking into account minority rights. Elsewedy Electric operates within the capital goods sector focusing on electrical components and equipment.

Minimum GPA for first stage Thanaweya Amma students at universities announced
Minister of Higher Education Khaled Abdel Ghaffar announced that the minimum GPA for admission to universities for Thanaweya Amma (high school) students for the first stage is 88.4 percent for the science branch, 80 percent for sports, and 65.7 percent for the literary branch. Abdel Ghaffar announced that students of the first stage can submit requests until Saturday. The difficulty of the questions was taken into account during the correction of the high school exams, and not because the ministry did not take into account student complaints about the difficulty of the questions, Shawky assured. He stressed that 2021 is different from previous years due to the new assessment system. Remittances from Egyptian expats record $28.5B in 11 months, $2.6B in May
CAIRO – 17 August 2021: Remittances from Egyptian expatriates increased 13 percent or $3.3 billion during 11 months from July to May of 2020/2021, recording $28.5 billion, compared to $25.2 billion during the same period of /20192020, according to data from the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE). The data showed that remittances from Egyptian expatriates during May 2021 increased 45.2 percent to reach $2.6 billion, compared to $1.8 billion during May 2020. CAPMAS announced earlier that remittances from Egyptian expatriates recorded a total of $205.3 billion, representing 31.7 percent of Egypt's total foreign exchange earnings over 10 years. During the fiscal year 2013/2014, remittances decreased 0.8 percent, recording $18.5 billion, while rebounded to $19.3 billion during the fiscal year 2014/2015 to record $19.3 billion, marking a rise of 4.4 percent compared to the fiscal year 2013/2014. Moreover, remittances from Egyptian expatriates hiked 10.4 percent during the fiscal year of 2019/2020 to reach $27.8 billion, recording its highest record ever, compared to $25.2 billion during the fiscal year of 2018/2019.

Egyptian Naval Forces and their US counterparts carried out a joint transit naval training within the Southern Fleet in the Red Sea on Tuesday. The exercises come as a continuation of the Egyptian Navy’s plan to conduct trainings with friendly countries, a statement for the military spokesman said. The Egyptian frigate Sagem Taba and the USS Monterey Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser participated in the drill. Egyptian-American relations have recently witnessed a remarkable development, and the recent joint exercises between the two countries reflect a convergence of visions and goals to maintain maritime security and stability in the region.
