Egypt receives more than 1.7 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine through COVAX

With this new batch of COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca, we can better meet the ever-growing number of vaccine registrations that we are seeing across the country and move one step closer towards recovery,” Egyptian Health Minister Hala Zayed said. "I was delighted to see the arrival of further doses of COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca to Cairo. This milestone further demonstrates the value of governments, industry and others working together to fight against the pandemic,” said Hatem Werdany, Country President for Egypt, AstraZeneca. Early 2021, Egypt received 2,623,200 shots of the AstraZeneca vaccine through COVAX, according to a statement issued by the United Nations (UN) on May 31, 2021.

UK tops US, Australia as study destination for Emirati students in 2019/20
Despite the United Arab Emirates being a popular destination among international students due to its strong universities and English study programs, many Emirati students looked abroad for higher education last year, the education search platform Erudera.com reports. Last academic year, 6,015 Emirati students moved to the following UK countries:5,255 students in England575 students in Scotland130 students in Wales55 students in Northern IrelandIn total, 33,310 students from the Middle East studied in the UK during 2019/20. That year, the UK also welcomed a record number of international students worldwide, hosting 556,625 international students overall. Meanwhile, just 2,074 Emirati students studied in the US that same year, marking a 134 percent increase since 2006/07. Since 2016, Germany has witnessed an 80 percent decline in Emirati students, whereas Australia between 2018-2021 has seen a drop of 29.52 percent, from 376 down to 265 students.

Arab influencers visit National Museum of Egyptian Civilization
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Fustat received a delegation of Arab influencers and bloggers, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said in a statement on Friday. The internet stars are currently on a visit to Cairo, Alexandria, and the Red Sea to promote Egyptian tourism in the Arab market. During their tour in Cairo, the delegation was keen to visit the NMEC and view its unique artifacts, especially the royal mummies, which were transferred in a royal procession in April from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square. The delegation was received by Ahmed Ghoneim, CEO of the NMEC, and Ahmed Youssef, CEO of the Egyptian Tourism Authority. The group toured the museum, during which they expressed their fascination with the royal mummies and other artifacts displayed in the museum, which tell the story of Egyptian civilization through different historical eras.

Man accused of murdering 16 Egyptians in Libya reportedly arrested
The 444th Fighting Brigade of Libya’s Government of National Unity (GNA) announced the arrest of a person accused by of killing 16 Egyptian citizens in Libya in 2016 by firing squad, RT reports. An undercover unit from Libya’s security forces arrested the man “H.A.” on Wednesday evening. The man is accused of killing the 16 Egyptians in the city of Bani Walid. COVID-19 in Egypt: 95 new cases, 7 deaths on Thursday
Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population on Thursday reported 95 new coronavirus cases, nine deaths, and 212 recoveries. A total of 285,061 cases have been reported in Egypt, alongside 16,604 deaths and 233,729 recoveries. The committee, headed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, agreed that restaurants, cafes, shops, and malls may return to summer working hours. Egypt is also preparing for the imminent arrival of the delta variant, which has been sweeping through neighboring countries. The Health Ministry is currently working to issue QR-coded vaccination certificates for Egyptians and foreigners that receive their doses in the country.

Egypt extends condolences to Mali over death of dozens in attacks
CAIRO – 12 August 2021: Egypt extends “sincere” condolences to Mali in the wake of attacks in Mali perpetrated against civilians, causing the death of more than 50 people, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The attacks in the Gao region, carried out suspected terrorists earlier this week, wounded several others. “Egypt “expresses its sincere condolences and sympathy with the sisterly Mali in the wake of the attack witnessed by some villages in the Gao region witnessed,” the ministry said, wishing the injured a speedy recovery. The ministry also affirmed solidarity with Mali along with the Malian government and people in the face of all forms of violence, extremism and terrorism. Al-Azhar, Egypt’s top religious authority, also condemned the attacks against Mali, affirming that these terrorist groups seek corruption on earth and justify bloodshed of innocent people for despicable purposes.

Nagat also divorced from her second husband, film director Houssam El-Din Mustafa shortly afterwards and has remained single to date. Moreover, numerous renowned Arab music composers of the 20th century worked with Nagat, including Mohamed Abdel Wahab, Kamal el-Taweel, Mohamed el-Mongy, Baligh Hamdy and many others. Ready-to-wear garment exports hit $918m in 6 months in 2021
Head of the Export Council for Ready-made Garments Marie Louis, said in a statement Wednesday the sector's exports rose by 55 percent in June to reach $199 million, compared to $128 million during the same month last year. The sector's exports have been performing well since the beginning of 2021, with an improvement in demand in international markets and the council's efforts to raise awareness of market requirements and to organize a number of events aimed at increasing total exports. She announced the participation of nine Egyptian factories in the “Magic Show” exhibition, held in Las Vegas in the United States of America on August 8-11 this year, the first actual session of the exhibition to be held since the emergence of the coronavirus pandemic, in coordination and cooperation with the GTEX MENATEX Egypt program of the International Trade Center ITC. Participation virtually in the exhibition was for two months from August 1 till early October 2021, she said, explaining that it is a new system adopted by most departments organizing exhibitions to help all exporters enhance access of their exports to various global markets and provide equal opportunities. She praised the new rules of exhibitions for fiscal 2021-2022, which have been recently approved, noting the vital role of Minister of Industry and Trade Nevin Gamae in meeting the demands of the export sector and reaching the best program for participation in exhibitions.

Egypt condoles with Algeria over victims of deadly wildfires
People attempt to put out a fire in the mountainous Tizi Ouzou province, east of Algiers, Algeria August 10, 2021 - ReutersCAIRO – 11 August 2021: The Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday expressed “sincere” condolences with the Algerian state and people over the death of Algerians in wildfires across many provinces. Algeria is witnessing three days of national mourning as wildfires that broke through forested areas across northern Algeria have caused the death of at least 65 people in the country, according to state TV on Wednesday. Algerian army has been deployed to combat the fires and so far, 28 soldiers have died and 12 others have been seriously injured, according to Reuters. “The Arab Republic of Egypt expresses its sincere condolences and sympathy with the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, its brotherly people and the families of the victims of the fires that broke out in a number of Algerian provinces and caused the death and injury of many citizens,” the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said. “Egypt stresses its full solidarity with the sisterly Algeria in this tragic incident, expressing sincere wishes that Allah (God) grants the injured a speedy recovery,” the ministry added.

EGX ends Wednesday in green, market cap. gains LE 2.34B
CAIRO – 11 August 2021: The Egyptian Exchange (EGX) ended Wednesday’s session in green, adding around LE 2.34 billion to market capitalization, amid Egyptian purchases. Market capitalization gained around LE 2.34 billion, recording LE 715.71 billion, compared to LE 713.37 billion in Tuesday’s session. Egyptian investors were net buyers at LE 40.17 million, while Arab and foreign investors were net sellers at LE 23.08 million, and LE 17.09 million, respectively. Arab and foreign individuals were net sellers at LE 14.84 million, and LE 197,549, respectively, while Egyptian individuals were net buyers at LE 14.56 million. Egyptian organizations bought at LE 25.61 million, while Arab and foreign organizations sold at LE 8.24 million, and LE 16.89 million, respectively.

Almost 20k served under Sisi’s 2019 women’s health initiative: minister
18,200 women have been given free health exams and treatment as part of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s 2019 initiative to support women’s health in Egypt, Minister of Health and Population Hala Zayed announced. Zayed met with head of the Central Administration for Technical Support and Director of the Technical Office of the Minister of Health Nevin al-Nahhas to follow up on the initiative. Under the initiative, women undergo free routine examinations, and those that need it are referred to more advanced hospitals to perform x-rays, tests, and receive treatment. SCZone: Russian Industrial Zone will be first of its kind for Moscow
Head of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) Yahya Zaki said on Tuesday that the Russian Industrial Zone (RIZ), which is currently being built in the SCZone will be Russia’s first industrial zone abroad. He added that RIZ’s implementation is taking time, with some changes being made to its operational contract and a delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Zaki, talks between Cairo and Moscow concluded at the end of June, with important points being agreed upon and a timetable set for the zone’s opening. The US$7 billion zone is managed by the Russian Export Center and is predicted to see a mass of Russian companies signing agreements upon its full completion. Egypt and Russia agreed in July to expand RIZ to East Port Said and Ain Sokhna.

Second Khufu Solar Ship to be restored live before visitors at Egypt’s Grand Museum
CAIRO – 11 August 2021: Assistant Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Archaeological Affairs at the Grand Egyptian Museum Al-Tayeb Abbas said that the Grand Egyptian Museum’s visitors will see the restoration work of the second Khufu Solar Ship in action, during their visit to the museum. Abbas further explained that the work of assembling and restoring the second Khufu Solar Ship will take nearly 3 years, due to the poor condition of the wood that was extracted from the boat pit. The excavation was carried out in cooperation with the Japanese grant, and 1,700 pieces of wood were extracted. The discovery of the two ships of King Khufu dates back to May 26, 1954, when journalist Kamal Al-Malakh announced the discovery. As for the second Khufu Ship restoration project, extracting the timber is one of the largest restoration projects reflecting the fruitful cooperation between Japan and Egypt.
