Qatar's Sheikh Tamim Engages Somali and Ethiopian Leaders Amid Red Sea Deal Dispute"MOGADISHU, Somalia - The emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, recently held separate phone conversations with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed amid escalating tensions between the two neighboring countries. The discussions were centered around a controversial deal that Ethiopia reached with the breakaway region of Somaliland earlier this year, which granted Ethiopia access to the Red Sea. During the phone talks, Sheikh Tamim emphasized the importance of resolving the dispute through dialogue and peaceful means. The emir's conversations with the Somali and Ethiopian leaders come at a critical time, as the dispute over the Red Sea deal threatens to further destabilize an already volatile region. Sheikh Tamim's phone talks with President Hassan Sheikh and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed are seen as part of Qatar's efforts to defuse tensions and promote dialogue between the two countries.

Sharron Davies has taken a swipe at the BBC’s new director of sport after he made a “massively offensive” comment in 2019. Alex Kay-Jelski wrote an article stating that the likes of Davies and Martina Navratilova were “not experts” on the issue of trans competitors in women’s events. His piece, written in The Times, had also suggested having separate categories for trans athletes was similar to having “special categories for Jamaican sprinters and Ethiopian marathon runners”. The Olympic silver medallist said the comments were “massively offensive” as she questioned the broadcaster’s decision. “My daughter is mixed race and does track and field, I take massive offence to that.

GENEVA: The United Nations refugee agency on Thursday said the number of people forcibly displaced stood at a record 117.3 million as of the end of last year, warning that this figure could rise further without major global political changes. “These are refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced people, people being forced away by conflict, by persecution, by different and increasingly complex forms of violence,” said Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). “Conflict remains a very, very deep driver of displacement.” In its report on global trends in forced displacement, UNHCR said that there had been a yearly increase in the number of people forcibly displaced over the last 12 years. More that 9 million people have been internally displaced and another 2 million have fled to neighboring countries including Chad, Egypt and South Sudan, Grandi said. In Gaza, Israel’s bombardment and ground campaign have caused around 1.7 million people – nearly 80 percent of the Palestinian enclave’s population – to become internally displaced, many of them multiple times.

AL-MUKALLA: A commercial ship transiting the Red Sea was damaged on Wednesday in an attack by another vessel and a projectile thought to have been launched by the Houthi militia group, two UK maritime agencies said. A second maritime security service, Ambrey, identified the cargo ship as the Greek-owned Tutor and said it had suffered damage to its engine room. While the Houthis did not immediately claim responsibility for the attack, Ambrey said the boat seemed to have been launched by the militia group from Yemen. The judge was known for criticizing the Houthis for human rights violations and failing to pay public workers. Shortly before his abduction he voiced sympathy for a journalist who was attacked and beaten by the militia in Sanaa.

BEIRUT: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday that mediators would keep trying to close an elusive ceasefire deal for Gaza after Hamas proposed changes to a US-backed plan, some of which he said were “workable” and some not. The ceasefire proposal has global support but has not been fully embraced by Israel or Hamas. “Hamas has proposed numerous changes to the proposal that was on the table. Phase three would see the launch of a reconstruction plan for Gaza and the return of remains of deceased hostages. On the Israeli side, 15 soldiers and 10 civilians have been killed since the war in Gaza began.

“YOU CAN’T TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS”Isael Ze EtielThe Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is a long-standing organisation that seems stuck in its ways, unwilling to learn from past mistakes. The TPLF’s actions have not received the condemnation they deserve, with the ongoing targeting of civilians and causing further tensions in the region. Learning from past mistakes and embracing new approaches is essential to avoid repeating the same catastrophic outcomes. Only through a peaceful resolution can the people of these regions rebuild their lives and achieve lasting peace. Only a peaceful resolution can bring an end to the ongoing humanitarian crisis and allow the people of Amhara to rebuild their lives.
