Some of Amhara and Oromia’s political elite have rejected the dialogue process and are in armed conflict with the government. This can lead to ‘ethnic outbidding’ – when ethnic political groups adopt a radical position to outbid their opponents in order to garner support from their ethnic base. The National Dialogue Commission should pause the dialogue process on the basis of the multipartiality principle. This would help legitimise the national dialogue process and address Ethiopia’s political quagmire. Ethiopia’s competing political elites need to set aside factionalism and ethnic rivalry in favour of a negotiated political settlement through dialogue.

In a significant development, hotels across Ethiopia have restarted accepting full payment in US dollars from foreign passport holders for the services they provide. Aster Solomon, the president of the Addis Ababa Hotels Association, explained to Capital that the directive allowing hotels to collect service fees in US dollars from foreign nationals has been on the books for years. “The directive was already in place at the legal level, but the control was low, so that foreign nationals could only pay for the services used by the hotels where they were staying,” Aster stated. The government has now moved to tighten the controls once again, compelling hotels to accept full payments from foreign nationals in US dollars only. With the NBE’s renewed enforcement of the directive, hotels across Ethiopia have begun implementing the same, ensuring foreign guests pay the complete service fees in US dollars once again.

Port of Mombasa cargo volume rise as Dar es Salaam and Djibouti hit by congestionShare This News Story:MOMBASA : The volume of the transit cargo handled through the Port of Mombasa has grown significantly on the back of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) renewed push to improve efficiency. Mombasa ship turnaround in May 2024 stood at four days compared to Dar es Salaam, which reached up to 25 days early this year, leading some shipping lines to drop cargo at Mombasa port for transhipment to Tanzania and Indian Ocean islands that rely on Dar Port. Mombasa port, owing to its location and distance, is the ideal port for them. The KPA boss said acquisition of new equipment last year has been a game changer for Mombasa port. In the last six months, Mombasa port handled 690 TEUs of Ethiopian cargo compared to only 14 TEUs in the corresponding period last year.
