Some 189 people died when a Boeing 737 Max 8 plunged into the Java Sea off Indonesia on Oct. 29, 2018. The Justice Department has indicated it is deliberating over whether to proceed with a prosecution of the company, and has said a decision will come on or before July 7. The families argue in the letter to the Justice Department that the “appropriate action now is an aggressive criminal prosecution of The Boeing Company” in a jury trial. If the government enters plea negotiations with Boeing, the families contend the company should be offered no concessions. The families also advocate for criminal prosecutions of the responsible corporate officials at Boeing at the time of the two crashes.

Mr Ramaphosa hailed this government during his inauguration speech, but also warned that unless it addressed deep inequalities, the country could become unstable. "Through the ballots that they have cast, the people of South Africa have made plain their expectation that the leaders of our country should work together," President Ramaphosa, 71, said solemnly. Mr Ramaphosa told South Africans the coalition was committed to reversing inequalities and growing the economy. Mr Ramaphosa did not say to whom he was referring. Mr Ramaphosa is expected to appoint a cabinet in the coming days, which is to include the the DA and three other smaller parties.

Families of some of the people who died in two Boeing 737 Max crashes are asking federal officials to fine Boeing $24.8 billion and move quickly to prosecute the company on a criminal charge that was set aside three years ago. The first crash occurred when a Boeing 737 Max 8 operated by Indonesia’s Lion Air plunged into the Java Sea in October 2018 — and the second in March 2019, when an Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max 8 crashed nearly straight down into a field six minutes after takeoff from Addis Ababa. The push by the families comes as the Justice Department considers whether to revive a dormant criminal charge of fraud against Boeing. The Justice Department has until July 7 to tell a federal judge in Texas whether it will revive the case. The Justice Department opened an investigation into Boeing after a door plug blew off a 737 Max during an Alaska Airlines flight in January.

(The Hill) — Families who lost loved ones during two fatal Boeing crashes in 2018 and 2019 urged federal prosecutors Wednesday to bring “aggressive criminal prosecution” against the planemaker. Cassell also said the families “believe that the Department should launch criminal prosecutions of the responsible corporate officials at Boeing at the time of the two crashes, including in particular former Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg.”The Hill has contacted a Boeing spokesperson for comment. Boeing quality assurance inspector Sam Mohawk alleged the company mishandled “hundreds” of faulty parts that were likely installed on airplanes including the 737 Max. Calhoun began his testimony by standing and turning to apologize to the victims’ families. Every day, we seek to honor the memory of those lost through a steadfast commitment to safety and quality,” Calhoun said.

Boeing should be fined almost $25bn (£19.7bn) and face criminal proceedings over two fatal 737 MAX 8 crashes, according to relatives of some of the 346 victims who argue the company is guilty of the "deadliest corporate crime in US history". Then, Boeing agreed to pay $2.5bn to resolve the investigation into its conduct, compensate victims' relatives and overhaul its compliance practices following the crashes of 2018 and 2019. Boeing denied last week that it had violated the terms of the deferred prosecution agreement through its production practices ahead of the MAX 9 Alaska Airlines accident. AdvertisementSix months earlier, a Lion Air 737 MAX 8, carrying 189 passengers and crew, crashed in Indonesia. The relatives want the court in Texas to throw out the deferred prosecution agreement.

NEW YORK (AP) — Oh, you thought going to a WNBA basketball game might be an escape from the arguments and polarization that are so common in American life these days? “Sport,” she says, “is a microcosm (that) reflects and refracts society.”What makes Clark distinctive also makes her a lightning rodThat Clark merits attention for her basketball prowess is not in doubt. (There are white players on the Olympics roster, a veteran squad in search of its eighth straight Olympic gold against tough international competition.) “There are a lot of incredible basketball players with really interesting and compelling stories — as players and as people,” she wrote in an email. “What is happening right now feels like a forced monoculture with a singular focus on one person.”___AP WNBA: https://apnews.com/hub/wnba-basketball

(WASHINGTON) — The judge overseeing former President Donald Trump’s classified documents case will kick off a series of hearings this week on motions to dismiss the case. One of the hearings is expected to focus on a legal theory pushed by conservative legal critics of special counsel Jack Smith that seeks to invalidate his appointment. Judge Cannon, for example, has set aside all of Friday for a hearing on Trump’s motion arguing that Smith’s appointment was unlawful – an issue other courts have largely rejected. On Monday, Cannon will kick off her court schedule with another hearing related to Smith’s appointment – a motion brought by Trump challenging the funding of the special counsel’s office. The same day, Cannon will hear arguments over Smith’s request for a gag order limiting Trump’s rhetoric about law enforcement involved in the search of Mar-a-Lago in August 2022.

The Institute of Ethiopian Standards (IES) has began work to implement a new system that allows manufacturers to purchase essential standards electronically. This shift from a physical to an online platform streamlines access to standards, potentially expediting the production process for Ethiopian manufacturers. Previously, manufacturers were required to visit the IES in person to acquire these standards, a necessary step before beginning production. The new online system will eliminate this physical barrier, allowing manufacturers to purchase the standards they need remotely and proceed with product preparation and production based on these established guidelines. IES' score functions include developing Ethiopian standards, providing technical support and training related to these standards, and conducting research and studies to inform the development of new and improved standards.

(NEW YORK) — New York’s highest court on Tuesday declined to take up a challenge to the limited gag order imposed on former President Donald Trump by the judge who oversaw his criminal hush money trial. The New York Court of Appeals rejected Trump’s appeal “upon the ground that no substantial constitutional question is directly involved.”Judge Juan Merchan prohibited Trump from discussing witnesses, jurors and others associated with his criminal trial, which ended in a conviction last month. A jury found Trump guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to a 2016 hush money payment to Stormy Daniels, an adult film actress, in order to boost his electoral prospects in the 2016 presidential election. It marks the first time in history that a former U.S. president has been convicted on criminal charges. All rights reserved.
