The latest Chief Economists Outlook released today presents a growing sense of cautious optimism about the global economy in 2024. More than eight in ten chief economists expect the global economy to either strengthen or remain stable this year – nearly double the proportion in the previous report. Some 97% of respondents anticipate that geopolitics will contribute to global economic volatility this year. “The latest Chief Economists Outlook points to welcome but tentative signs of improvement in the global economic climate,” said Saadia Zahidi, Managing Director, World Economic Forum. Expectations for China are slightly less optimistic, with three-quarters expecting moderate growth and only 4% predicting strong growth this year.

Mezgebe was one of the EWCA beneficiaries of the human-elephant coexistence training in Tsavo earlier in the year. According to him, human-elephant conflict in Ethiopia has become more frequent and severe over recent decades because of human population growth and the expansion of agricultural and industrial activities. After joining university, I developed an interest in social science, but my passion for conservation was ignited when I joined the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority 15 years ago. What is the situation of human elephant coexistence in Ethiopia today, and what are some of the biggest threats facing this coexistence? Competition for the available natural habitats and resources has increased, and the resulting ecological imbalance has negatively influenced human-elephant coexistence.

NASA’s Lucy spacecraft unlocks asteroid Dinkinesh’s dynamic historyBy Will DunhamWASHINGTON (Reuters) – A little asteroid called Dinkinesh – visited last November by NASA’s Lucy spacecraft – has a surprisingly dynamic history, according to scientists, along with its moonlet Selam that is comprised of two bodies that gently melded into one. On the way, Lucy flew past Dinkinesh and Selam in the inner edge of the main asteroid belt. “During their lifetime, small asteroids may shed material, which later ends up forming a small satellite or satellites. Dinkinesh is the Ethiopian name for the Lucy fossil, meaning “you are marvelous” in the Amharic language. Lucy will next visit the asteroid Donaldjohanson in 2025 in the main asteroid belt, with 11 asteroids in total on its agenda.

Boeing has selected Ethiopia as the location for its African headquarters, favoring it over Kenya and South Africa due to Ethiopia’s exemplary aviation safety record. This decision is perhaps the result of Ethiopian Airlines’ strong commitment to Boeing, including becoming the company’s first African customer for the Boeing 777X and last year’s order of 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 20 Boeing 737 Max planes, despite the aerospace company’s recent challenges. To head the new establishment, Boeing appointed Henok Shawl, a former Ethiopian Airlines’ employee with extensive experience in aviation and telecommunications. Boeing projects that African carriers will need 1,030 new aircraft over the next two decades to meet international standards and its decision to set up shop on the continent is likely influenced by this development.
