In an exclusive interview, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud says Somalia will not yield to ‘pressure’ on the breakaway region. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has warned Ethiopia against taking steps to implement a controversial port deal it brokered with the breakaway region of Somaliland. Currently, Addis Ababa relies mainly on the smaller Djibouti for its port operations for inbound and outbound trade. We want Ethiopia to have access to the sea, there is no question about that,” Mohamud said, adding that the federal government was ready to negotiate a deal with Addis Ababa. Mogadishu has claimed that the deal amounts to a landgrab, while Addis Ababa says the deal is of a commercial nature and is vital to its economic needs.

Recent political maneuvers between Egypt, Somalia, and Ethiopia have exacerbated long-simmering tensions in the Horn of Africa region. Egypt views Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as an existential threat due to its reliance on the Nile River’s waters. With negotiations stalled, Egypt has signaled it will take any steps necessary to curb Ethiopia’s use of the Blue Nile’s waters. Ethiopia, for its part, has contributed enormously to stability through its role leading the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia since 2007. If drawn into open conflict by Egypt, Ethiopia may be forced to reduce or withdraw support, creating a dangerous power vacuum in Somalia.

Mesganu Arga, State Minister of Political and Economic Diplomacy at the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who was in charge of the presentation, expressed that Beijing firms should come and invest in agricultural processing, chemicals, fertilizers, and steel manufacturing, among other sectors. According to Arga, the aim is to strengthen the “All Climate Strategic Partnership” announced by President Xin Jinping and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during the latter’s visit to China in October 2023. He noted that Ethiopia has become a key investment destination for China as long as Beijing is an essential source of investment and a key trading partner for the African nation, which has much to offer in trade opportunities through the expansion of its industrial and economic free trade zones. Upon reiterating that Addis Ababa is one of the leading and pioneering subscribers of the Belt and Road Initiative in Africa, the diplomat affirmed that his country seeks to promote cooperation in the areas of sustainable development, regional connectivity, trade, investment, and tourism, where Chinese enterprises can play a leading role. jrr/iff/lam/nmr

Kidnapping and extortion are on the rise in Ethiopia, with cases even reported beyond the country’s borders. Even within armed groups suspected of multiple kidnappings, motives and tactics have varied depending on their factions or affiliates at the time. Some cases where kidnappers have claimed ransom were easier to prosecute, said an Oromia Regional State senior prosecutor. The justice system is reactive, and its effectiveness is evaluated based on the number of cases prosecuted, not the nature of the crimes, said another senior prosecutor at the Attorney-General’s office. Regardless of whether kidnappings are acts of banditry, terrorism or organised crime though, Ethiopia must conduct thorough intelligence-driven investigations and formulate a focused strategy to tackle these crimes.

Kidnapping has been a persistent threat for years in Oromia, a region that runs through the heart of Ethiopia and surrounds the capital, Addis Ababa. Abductions take place not far from Addis Ababa, as the OLA’s insurgency spreads to new areas, and target anyone. The road linking Addis Ababa to Djibouti’s port, Ethiopia’s main trade artery, has become a kidnapping hotspot in the past 18 months. After lengthy negotiations, the family paid 100,000 birr. Alemetu did not go to the police after she was released, fearful they would accuse her of funding terrorists because her family paid a ransom.

Festivities for the Orthodox Christian celebration of epiphany have been muted this year in Gondar, in the northwest Ethiopian region of Amhara where conflict has raged for months. Up to 250,000 people have participated in previous celebrations of Timkat, as epiphany is known in the Amhara language. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church is one of the oldest churches in the world. Those tensions have seen the federal government in Amhara clash with the local “Fano”, a nationalist militia that claims to be fighting for their regional rights. But an attempt last April by the federal government to disarm the Fano and other Amhara forces led to violence.
