News: Ethiopia takes third place in Africa for journalist incarceration, trailing behind Eritrea and Egypt(Photo: Innocence Project)Addis Abeba – Ethiopia has been designated as the third-worst country in Africa for the incarceration of journalists in 2023, according to a recent report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). The tally of imprisoned Ethiopian journalists has surged to eight, underscoring the formidable challenges prevailing in the nation’s media landscape. In April last year, Ethiopian Mass Media Professionals Association (EMMPA) has called on the government to “immediately release” all media professionals that are detained by security forces “without any legal procedure”. In a statement it issued today, the Association also urged for an end to harassment and intimidation that media professionals are facing in Ethiopia. In addition, none of the journalists detained in Eritrea have faced formal charges, and some of these cases represent the longest-known instances of journalist imprisonment worldwide.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has warned Ethiopia against attempts to violate Somalia’s territorial integrity, saying his country would ‘intervene’ if requested by Mogadishu. Al-Sisi affirmed on Sunday that Egypt stands with Somalia against any threat to its security and stability, expressing his rejection of the recent agreement signed between Somaliland and Ethiopia over a port in the Red Sea. Ethiopia currently relies on Djibouti as a major trade partner, as 95 percent of Ethiopia’s imports and exports pass through Djibouti. President Mohamud is currently on a diplomatic offensive to thwart Ethiopia’s attempts to access the Red Sea without the consent of Mogadishu. The Berbera Port has previously attracted foreign powers due to its strategic position at the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden, connecting the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean to the Red Sea via the strait of Bab-el-Mandeb.

"Prevailing pessimism regarding the economy, policy efficacy, and reduced allocation to China by global and Asian equity funds persists," he said in a commentary. Traders had started the year on a somewhat sour note as a string of figures and warnings from Federal Reserve officials all but doused expectations rates will be cut in March and keep coming down through 2024. No matter how high interest rates go, the economy will continue to glide right through."
