The Egyptian Justice Party said that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s attempts to demand maritime access to a port on the Red Sea has raised concerns among Ethiopia’s neighboring countries. A statement from the party said: “The speech of the Ethiopian Prime Minister before his country’s parliament, about what he called ‘the existential necessity for Ethiopia to reach an outlet in the Red Sea,’ continues to raise reactions and questions about the motives of the campaign launched by the Ethiopian Prime Minister.”The speech was well-received by Ethiopian media and political circles, the statement added, but has drawn out concern from neighbors such as Eritrea, Djibouti, and Somalia – countries that the speech addressed as potential destinations to guarantee the sea port. The Justice Party explained that Ethiopia seeks seaports in the Horn of Africa region as part of a plan that Abiy Ahmed desires to implement for his overall project to achieve economic progress for Ethiopia and overcome its status as a landlocked country, thereby increasing Ethiopia’s insistence on owning shares in seaports in the region.

The Horn of Africa and the adjacent Red Sea is a strategically important area that has been ravaged by instability. To buttress his argument, Abiy referenced legendary nineteenth-century Abyssinian emperors and warriors who proclaimed the Red Sea as Ethiopia’s “natural boundary”. Abiy’s calls for Ethiopia to acquire a sea port have, understandably, encountered pushback from Somalia, Djibouti, and Eritrea. Following the war, Assab remained part of Eritrea, forcing Ethiopia to explore other trading routes. Following the devastating war, Ethiopia and Eritrea remained stuck in a no peace-no war stalemate marked by both sides funding each other’s militant opposition groups.

The spectacular implosion of the Tigryan political class is a cruel epitome of self-destruction in a spectacular fashion. With the Oromo political class, the problem is that it hates the Amhara more than it loves itself. Stuck in a reverse gear, its political energy is wasted trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. I cannot conclusively say the Amhara political class is more dangerous than the Oromo political class. This can come from an outside invasion, internal revolt outside of the Oromo, Amhara, and Tigray intellectual cabals, or from a divine intervention.
