Toulouse, 05 November 2024 -Ethiopia's national flag carrier and largest Airbus operator in Africa, Ethiopian Airlines, has taken delivery of its first of four A350-1000 from Airbus in Toulouse, France. With a total capacity of 395 seats, the A350-1000 will increase Ethiopian Airlines' passenger capacity and provide enhanced passenger experience in the largest business class cabin in the airline's fleet. Ethiopian Airlines will also introduce Airbus' new HBCplus satcom connectivity solution, offering seamless, high-speed gate-to-gate connectivity. Ethiopian Airlines has taken delivery of its first Airbus A350-1000, the initial example of the largest family member on the African continent. Ethiopian, which has 21 A350s in its fleet, converted four previous -900 orders to the -1000. It will use this larger variant to serve routes including Paris, Frankfurt, London and Washington DC. The aircraft (ET-BAW) is configured with 395 seats including a business-class cabin, and feature HBCplus satcom connectivity. Airbus has secured orders for 302 A350-1000s, of which 88 had been delivered by the end of September this year.

Ethiopian Airlines Group has acquired the Airbus A350-1000, making it Africa’s first airline to operate this largest and most advanced passenger aircraft. The A350-1000’s enhanced capacity is believed to be well-suited to Ethiopian’s busiest routes, helping meet rising global demand with improved efficiency. In another development, Ethiopian Airlines has expanded its network in South Asia by launching five weekly flights to Dhaka, Bangladesh. This new route provides travelers from Bangladesh with convenient access to over 155 destinations, including major cities in Africa, Europe, and North America. During the launch ceremony, Ethiopian Airlines’ Chief Commercial Officer, Lema Yadecha, underscored the strategic importance of the route in strengthening socio-economic ties between Ethiopia and Bangladesh.

Since its founding in 2015, KA Imaging, a Waterloo spinoff, has been revolutionizing x-ray technology in Canada and around the world. The company was founded by three visionary Waterloo alumni: Amol Karnick (BASc '95), Sina Ghanbarzadeh (MASc '14, in memoriam) and Dr. Karim Karim (BASc '99, PhD '03) who all had a goal to create significant social impact by advancing X-ray imaging technology. Today, KA Imaging has grown to more than 50 employees, with its innovative products being utilized in 10 countries across three continents. The Reveal 35C was also used to detect fractures in wrists, ankles, hips and spines, as well as diagnose pneumonia. Looking forward, Karim highlights that the Reveal 35C is the first portable detector using spectral X-ray technology.

Ethiopian Airlines is preparing to introduce its first Airbus A350-1000 into its fleet, marking a significant milestone in its modernisation and expansion strategy. This new addition is not only the first A350-1000 for Ethiopian Airlines but also the first of its kind in Africa. “Excitement is in the air as we count down … until the arrival of our new A350-1000,” the carrier said on X/Twitter. Ethiopian celebrated the inaugural flight in an event that brought together the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Ethiopia, high ranking officials, and Ethiopian Airlines’ executives.
