Opinions of Monday, 20 September 2021Columnist: Amanda ClintonThe new entry rules for travelling into the U.K (that applied from July 26, 2021) and traveling into the United States (that will apply from November 2021) means that double vaccinated people who got vaccinated in the U.S, E.U, or the U.K can enter the U.K without quarantine. Therefore the rules appear to suggest that if you are British or Ghanaian etc. but double vaccinated elsewhere, that is outside the U.S, U.K, or E.U, the standard 10-day quarantine still applies as a blanket rule. If that is the case, should different rules apply depending on which country you got vaccinated in? U.S, U.K, and E.U representatives should shed more light on these new quarantine rules to be applied and clarify why such a distinction exists.

However, he questioned whether Psalm Adjeteyfio’s cry for help is a failure of the pension system in the country. “That being said, can we view TT’s cry for help as a failure of our pension system in the country? If so, the questions that comes to mind will be: Is TT receiving pension? “From my perspective, addressing TT’s cry for help is like trying to fix one pothole on a highway with thousands of potholes. “Therefore, this the time for policy makers to reflect on our current pension system and redesign it to meet current living conditions, and if possible, make it mandatory for all working citizens to contribute to a national pension scheme as it’s done in America with the social security system,” he said.

General News of Tuesday, 21 September 2021Source: presidency.gov.ghThe President of the Republic and Co-Chair of the Group of Eminent Advocates of the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has urged world leaders to hasten the implementation of the 17 UN SDGs in order to build a fairer, healthier, safer and more prosperous world for all. The net effect of these adverse developments is that our world is unlikely to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger by 2030,” the President said. “With an estimated US$360 trillion available in global financial assets, as of 2019, the resources to finance the SDGs are certainly available. “New forms of social practice and organization, as well as new and improved technological products and processes, are key enablers for achieving the SDGs. Whilst embracing innovation, deliberate steps should be taken to discourage innovations that contribute to environmental degradation, that are disruptive of livelihoods, and that exacerbate inequalities,” President Akufo-Addo added.

According to the ILO, the unemployment rate, as captured by economics trading.com, has averaged 6.17% in the last 30 years in the fourth republic and currently stands at about 4.53% in 2020. A trend analysis of the unemployment rates in the 4th Republic since 1991 reveals a steady rise in the unemployment rate from 4.66% in 1991 to a peak level of 10.4% in 2000 during the Rawlings regime. Comparatively the latest statistical evidence of 4.12% unemployment rate for 2019 thus makes it the lowest unemployment rate ever recorded in the last 30 years in Ghana. Notwithstanding this achievement of the current government, it must be recognised that the current unemployment rate is still relatively high, given that the rate seems to have risen from 2.8% in 1984 to its current levels. The inability of the economy to generate enough jobs to meet that requirement lends credence to the threat that the high youth unemployment poses to the country’s security.

In an interaction with fishermen, on this series of GhanaWeb Special, they told reporter, Paulina Dedaa Opoku, that strict measures needed to be rolled out to have the beaches clean. In the same way we clean markets and other public places, we should take up the responsibility to clean up beaches, especially public beaches.
