Rates increase proposal faces opposition from CllrsThe proposal of a three percent rates increase in Westmeath is proving contentious at this morning's Westmeath County Council statutory budget meeting with elected representatives pitted against council officials who are arguing that the increase is necessary. A thirty minute adjournment has been called to allow members come up with ways of negating the €392,751 impact that will result if the rate increase sought by the executive is not approved. County CEO Barry Kehoe, setting out the current and projected budgetary position, told members that in preparing the budget, the management team wanted to lay the groundwork for the council’s term right through to 2029. To that end, he said, it was vital that the council adopt a medium-term approach, so that the development of Westmeath and, thereby, the quality of life locally can be maintained and improved to the maximum extent possible. Mr Kehoe said the council's draft budget anticipated expenditure in Westmeath this year of a total of €117.6 million, an increase of around €9.5 million on the 2024 figure, which was of €108.1 million.

Meet the candidates: Aoife Masterson, Sinn FéinHere is our Q & A with Aoife Masterson from Tullamore, who was one of three Sinn Féin candidates to be elected to Offaly County Council at the recent local elections. Why should people have confidence in Sinn Féin to solve the housing crisis when the party has never been in power before in the Dáil? Sinn Féin will not shy away from the action that needs to be taken, and we are committed to building 300,000 houses over the next five years. What other party or parties would Sinn Féin be prepared to form a coalition Government with? Sinn Féin wants to form the next Government without either Fianna Fail or Fine Gael, but we will exclude nobody.

A planning application for nine apartments in the county has been refused by Roscommon County Council. In September the council received an application for permission to change the use of an existing derelict pub building on Saint Patrick's Street, Castlerea, into nine apartments. The application also sought permission to alter the elevations of the building, the construction of an extension along with alterations to the existing roof. On November 21st, council planners refused permission on four grounds, including that the proposal would be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area. It was also not satisfied that the proposed development would not result in increased or “otherwise undue potential for overlooking of nearby properties”.

Eva OsborneMedical scientists will ballot members for industrial action in the coming weeks due to the HSE’s suppression of posts vacant on December 31st, 2023, and failure to replace posts vacant since then. A motion on a ballot was passed unanimously at the 2024 Medical Laboratory Scientists Association (MLSA) AGM. Many medical scientist posts were vacant on December 31st, 2023, due to the longstanding recruitment and retention crisis in the profession, and the situation has worsened since then with further posts becoming vacant, the MLSA said. MLSA general secretary Terry Casey said: “The demands on laboratory services continue to grow, and medical scientists continue to try to keep services going at great personal cost. In a letter to the HSE, the MLSA stated the following reasons for balloting members on industrial action:

Andrew played badminton for Ireland during the 1970s, competing in tournaments such as the 1975 European Junior Badminton Championships in Copenhagen. Two of her teammates back then were in Southampton to compete for Ireland in pickleball, fellow Lisburn native George Stephens and Belfast's Heather Jackson. “In 1975 the three of us played in the European juniors in Denmark when we were 17,” said Andrews. “Here we are 50 years later so we’re quite proud of the fact that we’re still alive and playing sport at a decent level. “We had to go through that in the juniors as well!”Find out more information about the European Pickleball Championships by visiting www.europeanpickleballfederation.org

And I’m humbly asking people to lend me and lend Fine Gael their number one vote, because we have a plan. The last coalition saw Fine Gael and Fianna Fail form a historic coalition, with the Green Party serving as a junior partner. “We would have always felt that the three parties, Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Sinn Fein, were in about the 20s. “I’ve led with three parties, with the Green Party, Fine Gael and ourselves, and that was complex, challenging, but we did it. “I have met zero per cent of people with any confidence in Fine Gael or Fianna Fail sorting the housing crisis.

It comes after Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood criticised the legislation and made clear she would vote against it in a strongly worded letter to constituents which emerged over the weekend. In a letter last month, Cabinet Secretary Simon Case said the Government would remain neutral and suggested ministers avoid taking part in public debate on the issue. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has declined to say which way he will vote, arguing that he does not want to put pressure on other MPs. Others including Home Secretary Yvette Cooper have been less explicit but indicated their support for the measures in the Bill. Meanwhile Ms Mahmood, Mr Streeting and Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds have said they will reject the legislation.
