40% of men have ‘traditional’ views of the opposite sex, research finds
New research has found that 40% of men have “traditional” views of the opposite sex, and half of those “traditionalist” views are harmful towards women. The findings from Women’s Aid, to mark its 50th birthday, also show traditionalist views are higher among younger men — two thirds of males aged 18 - 29 fall into the category. Compared to the “moderate” group, traditionalists are more likely to be younger men, with 67% of men aged 18 - 29 holding more traditional views. The survey found that only half of traditionalists agreed that men should be involved in conversations about gender equality. Finian Murphy, from Core Research, which carried out the study, said: “This research reveals how most men in Ireland have an evolved view of manhood, away from traditional attitudes of strength, stoicism and being the primary provider.

Mother of man deliberately knocked down sues car owner and brother
Kenneth FoxThe mother of a young man who was "deliberately run down" by a car in Tallaght, Dublin, has sued the vehicle owner and the owner's brother who had taken out a temporary insurance policy on the car at the time. Vera Lynch (57), mother of Stephen, who died at the scene on April 13th, 2017, has sued the car owner, Otis Reynolds, and Dean Reynolds, who had taken out the temporary insurance policy. Axa says for the Dean Reynolds policy to operate there must be evidence of his driving and there was not. Following some discussions, the car reversed backwards and then drove forward striking Mr Lynch. Neighbours who had come out lifted the car off Mr Lynch who was fatally injured.

It comes after Fianna Fáil candidate for Longford-Westmeath Dympna Cunniffe questioned in a social media post whether voters would want their children to pass a centre for asylum seekers while on their walk to school. The post was referring to a centre earmarked for asylum seekers in Athlone, where a group of councillors are seeking legal advice to challenge the move. Mr Martin said developments in Athlone were a “manifestation of broader pressures on communities” around migration. He said there had been “unprecedented” increase in the number of people seeking asylum in Ireland, coupled with the State’s response to accommodate 100,000 Ukrainians fleeing the war.

Web Summit gave €450,000 to The Ditch last year
The Ditch news website was given €450,000 by Web Summit last year, according to accounts just filed by Manders Terrace Ltd, the company behind the tech events. The news organisation, which is owned by two journalists, has been championed and promoted by the Web Summit chief executive Paddy Cosgrave. Asked today if any money has been given by Web Summit to the news site in 2024, a spokeswoman referred back to last November’s statement which said the funding relationship had concluded. This was in turn controlled by Adam Connon, general counsel to the Web Summit. The accounts show that, at year end, Web Summit had €31.2m in cash reserves, up from €19m in 2022.

The incident happened on the Tattygare Road in Lisbellaw shortly after 8am on Wednesday. They said no injuries were reported by either the passengers or the driver, adding that all the children were safely transported from the scene by parents or family members. “The PSNI was in attendance and a review of the circumstances of the incident will be undertaken,” they said. A PSNI spokesperson confirmed officers attended a single vehicle road traffic collision involving a bus in the Tattygare Road area of Lisbellaw on Wednesday morning.

Dundalk FC owner claims financial firm has wrongfully appointed receiver over propertyHigh Court reportersThe owner of Dundalk Football Club claims a debt firm has “wrongfully” purported to appoint a receiver over his property and obtained a High Court judgment against him by “surprise and/or mistake”. On Wednesday, Mr Justice Garrett Simons granted Mr Temple permission to serve Mars Capital with notice of a motion scheduled for next Tuesday. Those proceedings arise out of a 2007 loan of €254,000 advanced to Mr Temple from EBS Building Society for his purchase of the Hoey’s Lane property. Mr Temple appealed against the Circuit Court decision and challenged EBS Mortgage’s subsequent purported sale of the alleged outstanding loan to Mars Capital. He said Mars Capital issued a motion last January seeking judgment against him on the basis of his alleged default in filing a defence.
