Photograph: AP Photo/Alex BrandonUncertainty over the trade policy environment in the wake of November’s US presidential election is already affecting hiring in Ireland by firms operating in the tech sector, according torecruitment specialists Morgan McKinley. “The technology sector has seen a cautious approach from US tech companies operating in Ireland, particularly concerning the hiring of software development talent,” Ms Keevans said. The tech sector’s recruitment slowdown, especially in research and development roles, reflects broader economic uncertainties. This has led to increased demand for roles in risk management, ESG and operational resilience,” she said.

After months of heavy grey clouds it may be hard to believe that climate change – or more accurately – global “heating” is having any effect on Ireland. Yet despite the gloomy and cool conditions Ireland’s climate is changing in line with the predictions of climate science. The entire business model for Irish agricultural exports is reliant on a stable climate but this is no longer guaranteed. Driving the sea-level rise is cumulative ice loss from the world’s glaciers and from the Greenland ice sheet which reached a record high in 2023. There is little point trying to “balance” the existential threats posed by climate change and loss of nature with snippets of good news, however welcome they are.

A potted economic history of colonialism in IrelandFor postgrowth and degrowth economists, the Irish case is both intriguing and urgent. Ireland’s unsustainable FDI-agricultural economy is at once a sordid product of its colonial subjugation, and a source of deep cultural attachment. Throughout this period, it was also a laboratory for the first conceptions of economic growth and national income. This period created a firm path dependency for Irish economic development, or the lack thereof. The Irish economy has shattered its ecological limits.

Leading stock markets diverged Tuesday ahead of a slew of interest rate decisions and earnings reports from big companies. In Europe, London fell initially before recovering, while continental exchanges mostly closed higher on faster-than-expected economic growth in the euro zone. The Federal Reserve is expected to leave US interest rates unchanged at the end of its policy meeting Wednesday. The Tokyo stock market closed slightly up on Tuesday. Starbucks earnings after the market closes in New York will be eyed too to judge US consumer sentiment.

GOLD FOR DANIEL WIFFEN! Team Ireland's Daniel Wiffen punches the water in delight! The field was condensed, but Daniel Wiffen surged to the front on the three-quarter juncture. As part of my research, I spent a week in Brighton with animal rights activists so austere their stare could curdle water. The head of a well-known anti-cruelty charity was helping me out, so I took her to lunch at a vegan restaurant. If meat really is murder, then I’ve been a willing Seven Day accomplice to terrible crimes for more than 50 years. I tried to find post-truth ways around vegetarianism like arguing with my wife that tuna sandwiches for lunch don’t count. I’m now cutting meat out one day a week.
