Men's Hockey: Australia 2 - Ireland 1 A second defeat for Ireland and Mark Tumilty's side. Benjamin Walker's final pass goes astray as Australia hang on and maintain possession to run the clock down. Nathan Ephramus' final effort trails wide. Ireland emerged the stronger of the sides in the second-quarter and a smartly worked short corner found its way to Lee Cole who thumped home. Disappointment for Mark Tumilty's men.

There is an almighty low in Galway after the Tribesmen lost a nail-biting All-Ireland Football Final to Armagh. “It was the worst defeat of all time,” said heartbroken Gary Monroe of Monroe’s Tavern in Galway city. It’s a shame after beating the best team, Dublin. Yesterday, everything seemed so different in Galway city. Even on the drive from Dublin west yesterday, there were Galway flags flying proudly along the motorway.

Hungary's Anna Luca Hamori celebrating as the decision of her fight against Tullamore's Gráinne Walsh was being announced at the Olympics in Paris this afternoon. Disappointment for Gráinne Walsh as she suffers defeat at OlympicsGráinne Walsh's involvement at the Olympic Games ended this afternoon (Sunday), when she suffered a split decision defeat to Hungary's Anna Luca Hamori. Hamori made an aggressive start and shaded a scrappy opening round on the judges' cards, as the Offaly woman struggled to find her rhythm. Walsh had a bit more success in the second round, and received a boost when Hamori's spoiling tactics resulted in her being deducted a point by the referee. And so it did, with four of the judges scoring the bout for Hamori, against one for Walsh.

Crowd boos convicted child rapist Steven van de Velde at beach volleyballBy Phil Blanche, PA, ParisDutch beach volleyball player Steven van de Velde, a convicted child rapist, was greeted by some boos on his Olympic debut in Paris. Van de Velde, 29, was sentenced to four years in prison in 2016 after admitting three counts of rape against a 12-year-old British girl. Unlike his fellow competitors, there were no cheers when Van de Velde was introduced to the crowd with some boos again clearly audible. The Dutch Olympic Committee maintain Van de Velde has been successfully rehabilitated and deserves his place in the squad. Van de Velde left the arena on his own after Italy’s three-set 22-20 19-21 15-13 victory.

With the latest advances in central heating and domestic hot water technology, the grand old, unsupported Irish immersion tank is something of an antique. If any boiler fails, there’s still a way to get that domestic hot water hot. My experience of a PV water diverter (the MyEnergi Eddi) has been very positive, with steaming hot water in the taps for about nine months of the year. I’ve never heard anyone who has the other technology, solar-thermal, complain about its proven, free contribution to the hot water supply year-round. You don’t need a supply of hot water on call.

This time, I visited the "Murmur of Bees" exhibition, which focused on the critical role of bees and their historical significance in Ireland. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned my beekeeping hobby in this column before, but it’s something I’ve been doing for a few years now. When I say "got into it," I mean I bought a hive and some bees and jumped right into the world of beekeeping. Beekeeping is, without a doubt, one of the most relaxing pastimes I’ve ever experienced. I attended the course, learned the basics of beekeeping, built a hive and a super, and prepared myself.
