President William Ruto and Governor Mutahi Kahiga during a meeting with UDA grassroots leaders from Nyeri County at Sagana State Lodge on January 17, 2026. [PCS]President William Ruto does not need political enemies in Mt Kenya, not when some of his most vocal allies in the region appear determined to do the damage for him. Politics is a team sport. When a president wins, his allies are expected to help consolidate goodwill, amplify development gains, and sell a coherent message to the public. Instead of operating as a disciplined political team, some leaders have chosen to rock the boat from within, replacing coordination with confrontation and collective responsibility with personal grandstanding.

The government has rolled out a nationwide skills certification programme targeting thousands of young Kenyans who acquired technical skills outside formal colleges and universities, in a move aimed at boosting employment and economic inclusion. According to Mwadime, the Ministry expects a total of 68,000 youth to receive certificates under the programme, which seeks to formally recognise practical skills gained through experience, apprenticeship, and informal training. The Labor Ministry heads, PS Shadrack Mwadime (left) and CS Alfred Mutua (in red striped tie), address the media on an earlier date. The certification comes years after President Uhuru, through the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), evaluated juakali workers and awarded the experts with certificates of recognition of prior learning. The certification programme aligns with the ruling party's 'Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda', which aimed to empower the least privileged members of society.

The rise is according to Europol’s 2025 EU Serious and Organised Crime Threat Assessment, which has discovered how the ‘DNA of organised crime’ is changing, with females gaining more prominent roles in global gang networks. Criminologist Alex Iszatt tells The Sun: “Gangster women have always existed within organised crime structures, but they have rarely been recognised as central figures of power and that long-standing misjudgement has been consistently exploited. No, come on!”Another improbable drug baron is Morag Yorston, a drug-dealing crime gang boss who flooded the streets of Dundee with heroin and cocaine. Police attention remains fixed on younger, violent men, which creates a blind spot that older women can operate within,” she says. “Two things can be true at one time,” said Haney’s granddaughter Cassie, following her death from cancer in 2013.

The Trump administration has quickly abandoned its familiar "deny and attack" playbook after initially using it when federal agents shot dead Alex Pretti in Minneapolis on Saturday morning. This White House has typically been quick to push back when criticised. But, perhaps tellingly, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt refused to echo Miller's comments herself on Monday when pressed on whether the president agreed with his senior adviser. That initial response had echoed the path the administration took three weeks ago, when federal law enforcement shot and killed another Minneapolis resident, Renee Good. And they will also be wary of pushing too far on immigration and law and order, two issues where they poll poorly.
