Former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has announced his retirement from active politics, saying he will now dedicate his time to promoting happiness in workplaces and coaching fellow politicians on life beyond public office. The announcement came Tuesday morning during a ceremony at Laikipia University, where he received an honorary doctorate in recognition of his distinguished public service and leadership. Speaking to close friends and family during the ceremony, Kiraitu said that after more than three decades in public service, it was time to step aside. “I have learnt my lessons,” he remarked, reflecting on a career that began in 1992 when he was first elected to Parliament. His wife, Priscillah Murungi, welcomed the announcement, noting that it was time for him to focus on other pursuits and enjoy a more balanced life outside the rigours of politics.

A total of 3,803 aspirants have registered to vie for elective positions on the UDA ticket just five days after the ruling party opened its online registration portal ahead of the 2027 General Election. According to figures released by the party, the early surge in enrolments signals intense competition within President William Ruto’s party, highlighting the high stakes for members seeking the party’s coveted tickets. The registrations follow a notice issued January 22 by the party’s National Elections Board (NEB), inviting all qualified and interested members to enlist as participants in the UDA Aspirants’ Forum set for February 4. The registration portal, accessible through the party’s official website, allows aspirants to formally enrol for the forum and marks the first structured step in UDA’s preparations for 2027. “All qualified and interested party members who wish to contest for various elective seats in the 2027 General Election are hereby invited to register as members of the UDA Aspirants’ Forum,” reads part of the notice issued by NEB chairman Anthony Mwaura.

President William Ruto has moved to quell fears among UDA party members over their role in upcoming coalition negotiations with the ODM ahead of the 2027 General Election, assuring them that the party’s core interests remain intact. Ruto has initiated talks with ODM party leader Oburu Oginga, with plans in place to sign a pre-coalition agreement ahead of 2027. We have carefully balanced all positions,” Ruto added. While the exact details remain confidential, sources indicate that both parties are seeking a formula that will maximise electoral gains while respecting internal party hierarchies. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has said more than half of sitting Members of Parliament are unlikely to return to Parliament after the next general election, citing a high attrition rate revealed in an actuarial report. Wetang’ula said an actuarial report presented during a committee on pensions that he chaired showed that the average attrition rate for MPs stands at 56 per cent. “Yesterday, I was chairing a committee on pensions, and an actuarial report shows that on the average our attrition rate is 56 per cent,” the Speaker said. “So as we sit here, at least 56 per cent will not see the inside of Parliament next election, and we want to make sure that there must be life, and good life after you leave Parliament," Wetang’ula said. He urged MPs to pause, reflect and refocus on their cardinal duty in the August House as political activity inevitably intensifies.

[Boniface Okendo, Standard]The Technical Working Group (TWG) on Gender-Based Violence has recommended amendments to the Sexual Offences Act, 2006, to introduce mandatory chemical castration for child sex offenders. “If you have a relative or individual repeatedly defiling a child, chemical castration reduces libido and helps protect the child,” she said, adding that the intervention would be accompanied by psychosocial support where necessary. What is chemical castration? Chemical castration is a medical intervention that suppresses the production of sex hormones and is administered through injections, implants, or oral medication. If adopted, Kenya would join countries including Poland, South Korea and Indonesia that have implemented chemical castration as a preventive measure for sexual offences.
