Dandora dumpsite /FILEAt least 1,000 waste pickers at the Dandora dumpsite have been awarded Sh25,000 each following a High Court ruling recognising violations of their constitutional rights. The decision, delivered by Justice Anne Omollo at Kisii High Court on February 5, followed a suit filed by five representing the broader group. The county government, through deputy director of environment Walter Onwenga, countered that the waste pickers were not county employees. As a result, the court awarded Sh25,000 to each of the 1,032 waste pickers represented, with half of the legal costs to be borne by the county. Justice Omollo noted that the award reflects “the duration of exposure, the vulnerability of the affected group and the nature of the established violations.”

In a petition filed by 39 students, the students challenged the university’s decision to discontinue online examinations, arguing that it was illegal, unreasonable and made without public participation. They said the decision could have serious consequences for some students, including the risk of dropping out. The institution told the court that academic staff had raised concerns about examination integrity during the online assessments. One of the key issues before the court was whether the Faculty Academic Committee acted outside its mandate by authorising the change. President William Ruto has defended his administration’s aggressive push to secure employment opportunities for Kenyan youth both locally and abroad, saying Kenyans are among the most skilled and intelligent workers globally. Speaking in Lamu, Ruto said many Kenyans speak better English than even native speakers from Western countries, a factor he noted has made the country’s workforce highly attractive to foreign employers. “We closed down close to 1,000 companies that were scamming our youths in the name of offering jobs abroad,” Ruto said. Additionally, Ruto announced that the government will assist qualified individuals who secure jobs abroad but lack funds for travel. “If someone gets a job abroad and does not have a flight ticket, the government will pay,” he said.
