On its part, Kenya’s political organisation is, to a great extent, a function of ethnic mobilisation. What follows is a display of how worlds apart France and Kenya are in attaching meaning to human life. Developments following Quentin’s death show how valued human life is in France. On the contrary, Ayomo’s death shows the persistence of dispensability of human life in service of politics in Kenya.

[PCS]Homa Bay Governor and ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga appears to be a woman on a mission as she ruffles feathers with perceived critics, launching an ambitious drive to strengthen ODM while simultaneously building President William Ruto's reelection bid. Rising incidents of political violence and the growing use of hired goons to disrupt rallies are stoking fears that Kenya could slide into a dangerous cycle of instability. Interior PS Raymond Omollo has dismissed claims of state involvement in the disruptions, warning against what he described as attempts to misuse young people for political violence. Archbishop Dominic Kimengich of the Eldoret Catholic Diocese warns the growing role of political goons ahead of next year’s general elections is alarming. Lawyer Koki Muli warned that the violence will have a major impact in the next elections, coupled with mistrust of the electoral commission if not addressed in time. “Growing mistrust in the IEBC risks deterring vulnerable groups from voting during periods of violence,” she says.

The development is intriguing because most leaders associated with Linda Mwananchi are members of ODM, a party that is currently backing Ruto’s re-election bid. The rallies have amplified his profile nationally and projected Linda Mwananchi as a serious political force. Yet, despite the new wave, several analysts insist the 2027 race will likely remain a two-horse contest between Ruto and a consolidated Opposition candidate. Addressing fears that Linda Mwananchi could split the Opposition vote, Sifuna offered reassurance. “I am now happy that we are seeing the United Alternative Government in Kisii and in other places,” Sifuna said.
