A week on from the dramatic raid that seized Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro, details of the intelligence surrounding the operation are becoming clearer, but some mysteries still remain. US officials have said they had one particular source who was able to provide detailed intelligence on Maduro's whereabouts which would have been critical to the operation. That has led to intense speculation about who it was and what has happened to them. All of the human intelligence on the ground fed into a "mosaic" of intelligence to plan the operation in conjunction with technical intelligence like mapping and satellite imagery. "It is not the military tactics that drive the operation, but the intelligence."

In yet another military invention that has the potential to drastically reshape modern warfare, China has unveiled its ultra-modern Hurricane 3000 air defense system, which can reportedly wipe out entire drone swarms without requiring expensive missiles to shoot down targets. The truck-mounted microwave weapon uses high-energy microwaves to target electronic systems that power enemy drones. Once locked in, the system fires high-power microwaves that penetrate electronic systems of enemy drones, completely frying it from the inside, and destroying the drone. Norinco plans to make the system more lethal by combing it with lasers and cannons to create an ‘Iron Triangle’ defense system. While the United States has a similar anti-drone system called Leonidas, its range is around 2 kilometers, lower than the 3 km range claimed by China’s Hurricane-3000 system.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has intensified his critique of leaders from Northern Kenya, questioning their investment in public institutions despite what he described as “massive resources” allocated to their counties under devolution. “I was surprised that some leaders from Northern Kenya did not reside or work there. Thirteen years later, does any county still require affirmative action? The DCP leader also questioned why children from other regions attend national schools in Mt Kenya, while some from the region are placed in 'smaller schools'. Northern Kenya leaders, including MPs led by Farah Maalim and several governors, criticised Gachagua, saying affirmative action in education remains necessary due to decades of marginalisation, insecurity, teacher shortages and cultural barriers that continue to affect the region’s performance.

Amnesty director Irungu Houghton/XAmnesty International Kenya Executive Director Irungu Houghton has resigned from the Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Demonstrations and Public Protests. In his decision, the human rights defender cited constitutional concerns and respect for a recent High Court ruling that faulted the panel’s legal foundation. In a resignation letter dated January 9, 2026, Houghton said his decision takes immediate effect and follows the Kerugoya High Court judgment delivered on December 4, 2025, which declared the panel unconstitutional. In the letter, Houghton also distanced himself from a December 15 application filed by the panel seeking a stay of the High Court ruling. Houghton clarified that his resignation should not be interpreted as acceptance of the High Court judgment by the panel, but rather as a principled act grounded in constitutional fidelity.

The United States’ withdrawal from several major global organisations under the previous administration marked a significant shift in its approach to multilateral engagement. Citing concerns over sovereignty, funding priorities and policy disagreements, Washington exited or suspended support for key bodies spanning health, climate, gender equality, urban development, education and energy. The move affected institutions such as global health agencies, climate change frameworks and renewable energy alliances, raising concerns about weakened international cooperation. Critics warned the exits could undermine global responses to shared challenges, while supporters argued the decisions protected national interests and accountability in international governance.
