Teach For Liberia is an education non-profit that works to ensure every Liberian child gets access to excellent, world-class education. The Fellowship is a conduit for promoting quality education in Liberia by increasing the number of qualified teachers in the classrooms. Its recruitment targets college and university graduates who hold a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, are below 40 years old, and are passionate about transforming Liberia.

Liberia: Wildlife and Conservation Reporters Network Aided in the Confiscation of Protected Animal
Monrovia — The Confiscation Unit of the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) with the aid of the Wildlife and Conservation Reporters Network have arrested a man for selling a Duiker (Baby Dear), one of the protected animals in Liberia. The man, John Flomo, believe to be in his late 60s, was caught selling the animal at a local restaurant in Sinkor, by the coordinator of the network, Joseph S. Wiah. The Wildlife and Conservation Reporters Network Coordinator, immediately contacted the Confiscation Unit of the FDA, who responded to the crime scene, and effected the arrest. The confiscated Duiker has been turned over to the Libassa Wildlife Sanctuary. In order to support sustainable use of wildlife for the benefit of the Republic of Liberia.

IRC Receives $17.8m USAID Grant to Scale Up Health Services in Liberia
Monrovia — IRC Liberia has received a $17.8 million grant from USAID; the United States Agency for International Development to support the government of Liberia’s National Community Health Program. Faith Cooper, IRC Liberia Country Director said, “We are delighted to have been awarded this crucial grant by USAID. The grant will allow us to improve the quality of health services in the target areas. PACS supported the government to strengthen health systems, improve reproductive maternal and child health, as well as restore public confidence in health facilities and health staff. 1061 communities were certified as open-defecation free (ODF) and IRC also supported COVID-19 training for over 2000 community health workers.

Nigeria, Bauchi State – Development Journalist and Environmental Justice Advocate of Liberia, Moses R. Quollin is appointed as national director of the Global Environmental and Climate Conservation Initiative (Global ECC Initiative) in Liberia. The Nigeria base Global ECC Initiative is an independent international campaign organization which aims to be a global leader in environmental and climate conservation with a view to ensuring healthy environment and ecosystem balance for sustainable development. Moses R. Quollin is also still serving the second year of a two year ambassadorial post as country coordinator of the Global Youth Climate Action Initiative (Climate Action Group Liberia), an international climate campaign organization that engages in raising awareness on climate change, advocacy, youth mobilization and empowerment for climate actions. Quollin] immense contributions, the activism as true African Ambassador in environmental justice, and your relentless advocacy for your country and Africa’s social-economic development. He currently heads the Liberia Forest Media Watch (LFMW), a network of media practitioners working to promote transparency and accountability in forest governance, and coordinates a radical forest advocacy radio program on Okay 99.5 FM across Liberia.

Monrovia – Members of the Board of Commissioners of the National Elections Commission (NEC) avoided going to Prison on Tuesday, February 23rd, as was planned by the Senate’s plenary on Thursday, February 18, and all thanks to the Supreme Court of Liberia. Meanwhile you are hereby ordered to stay all further proceedings and actions in the matter to include the incarceration pending the outcome of the conference,” the Supreme Court writ stated. After that day, any election case heard by the NEC and the Supreme Court could be deemed unconstitutional according to the senators. Any political party or independent candidate affected by such decision shall not later than seven days appeal against it to the Supreme Court. If the court sustains the election of a candidate, the Elections Commission shall act to effectuate the mandate of the Court.”

New Narratives/Leslie LumehBELLINZONA, Switzerland – A Liberian women told the Swiss Federal Criminal Court prosecuting Alieu Kosiah for war crimes that the former rebel commander raped her four times in one night in Voinjama, Lofa County. “I heard them (rebels) calling him (Kosiah) ‘General Kosiah,’” she said, adding the dawn attack on the village was the first time she heard of Kosiah. She also said she had known the sixth plaintiff, who had told the court he knew her during the war. It is also the first war crimes trial in a Swiss civilian court in the medieval, mountainous city Bellinzona.

Monrovia – Liberia’s Solicitor General Sayma Syrenius Cephus is being left to defend himself over an action he may have unilaterally taken when he wrote the National Elections Commission to halt the certification of Lofa County’s Senator-elect, J. Brownie Samukai. On Friday, February 19, Solicitor General Sayma Syrenius Cephus wrote the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC) instructing her not to certificate Lofa County Senator-elect J. Brownie Samukai whose conviction by the lower court was recently affirmed by the Supreme Court. Cephus’ letter to the Elections Commission Chairperson states, “You will recall that prior to the 8 December 2020 Election, Mr. Samukai was found guilty by the lower court along with his co-conspirators for the same crimes. But the court believes that Samukai and his colleagues did not exercise professional discretion. The trio have been ordered to restitute the amount of US$1.1 million – half of the amount within six months or face a two-year jail term.

MONROVIA — Scores of Indian nationals residing in Liberia have honored and appreciated their country’s former Consul General, Mr. Upjit Singh Sachdeva, for his indelible sacrifices and humanitarian assistance rendered the Indian community and Liberia and its citizens. Mr. Sachdeva, who is commonly known as “Jeety” in Liberia, was appointed Honorary Consul General of Indian to Liberia in 1998. On February 5, 2021, the Indian Government, through its Embassy in La Cote D’Ivoire, with immediate effect replaced “Jeety” as its Honorary Consul General to Liberia. ‘Jeety’ maintained that Indians should help build a stronger Liberian society that will incorporate everyone regardless of nationality or religion. He furthered that Indians residing in Liberia should not only respect the rule of law of the country, but they should also uphold and abide by it.

The mining is taking place on the Mano River that stretches through the Grand Cape Mount side of the Gola Forest National Park. “The FDA is having rangers around the Gola Forest National Park, dredge is not a small thing that you can move with without anyone see it so how come this one happened”, he argued. The Gola Forest National Park (GNFP) is home to some of the world’s endangered wildlife species which include but not limited to the African elephant, Zebra Deiker, the wild Chimpanzee among others. These illegal activities violate laws creating the Gola Forest National Park and the Wildlife Act of 2015.

In her presentation, she is expected to highlight the benefit to be accrued through the application of hard and effective fisheries management program and policies. Her emphasis will be on ensuring compliance of these hard management policies to sever as deterrents and promote safety at sea in support of the 2012 Cape Town Agreement. The 2012 Cape Town Agreement(CTA), which has been adopted by the IMO, replaces the Torremolinos Protocol of 1993 on the safety of fishing vessels. Until the CTA enters into force, there are no mandatory global safety regulations or standards for the safety of fishing vessels at sea.

In fact, the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization(ICAO) are clear. THE CONVENTION insists that airport runway end safety areas be provided at each end of a runway strip. The standards state hat a runway end safety area shall extend from the end of a runway strip to a distance of at least 90 meters. REGARDING OBJECTS on runway end safety areas, the ICAO regulations says object situated on a runway end safety area which may endanger aeroplanes should be regarded as an obstacle and should, as far as practicable, be removed. The Liberia Civil Aviation Authority was consulted by the government and we offer our input prior to the decision.
