MONROVIA – The Government of Liberia, through the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) and its partners, conducted a one-day National Multi-stakeholder Information-Sharing meeting bordering on the gazettement of the Krahn-Bassa Proposed Protected Area (KBPPA). Hence, the uniqueness of this area has become nationally and globally noticeable thereby proving its viability and legibility to become another worthy national park in Liberia. Situated in the heart of Liberia, the proposed protected area straddles three counties including Rivercess, Sinoe and Grand Gedeh. When approved by the national legislature, the Krahn-Bassa Protected Area will become the 6th in the series protected areas and the 4th 4th national park in Liberia. Others were the Traditional Council, representatives of the legislative caucus, national and international NGOS, Liberia National Tourism Association, and the NGO Coalition.

Gbarnga, Bong County – Three lawmakers of Bong County who supported the senatorial bid of outgoing senator Henry Yallah seem to be plotting against the ambition of Rep. Moima Briggs-Mensah to become Deputy Speaker of the 54th National Legislature. The position became vacant after the current Deputy Speaker and District Two lawmaker, Prince Moye, won was declared winner of the Senate race in Bong. Rep Briggs-Mensah, who supported Moye during the election, has declared her ambition to fill the soon-to-be vacant Deputy Speaker position. It seems three lawmakers in Bong County apparently angry at Rep Briggs-Mensah’s role in the just-ended election in the county are resolved to campaign against her in reprisal. One person is Rep Edward Karfiah, lawmaker of Bong’s District Five, who supported Yallah, said he won’t support Rep Briggs-Mensah’s ambition because of her role played in the just ended election in Bong.

The PMS-TWG seeks to ensure the building of a robust risk-based post-market surveillance systems for medicines that are found on the Liberian market. Director Boateng recalled that in 2010, with technical support from the predecessor promoting the Quality of Medicines (PQM) Program, the Government of Liberia established the Liberia Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA) through an Act of Legislation. Accordingly, Boateng said moving from a sporadic medicines quality monitoring activities toward robust risk-based-PMS programs is critical for a country to ensure the quality of medicines and medical products. ); Central Medicine Store (CMS); Global Fund, (GF) and World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, UNFPA, UNDP, USAID, PQM+; and the Liberia National Police. PMS-TWG vowed to work with the LMHRA, USP-Liberia to ensure that the objective for which the PMS-TWG was established is fully met.

U.S. Embassy Warns Travelers of Difficulty in Getting Cash from Banks in LiberiaMONROVIA – The United Embassy in Monrovia has warned its citizens and permanent residents visiting Liberia of the difficulties in getting cash in the country. The Embassy, in an alert to would-be travelers, noted that the banking sector in the country has been experiencing cash shortage over the last several months. James Hinneh, president of the association, said the Government of Liberia needs to take some serious action against APM Terminals for the delay in releasing goods to customers. He said one of the reasons APM Terminals finds it difficult to release goods on time is because of insufficient equipment to do their work effectively. The NCBAL president alleged that NPA management is in the know of what is happening as it relates to the clearing of containers but has not addressed the issue with APM Terminals. “We want the government to revisit the APM Terminals contract because they are not serving us well,” Amos Toe added. “We are females, if we are not working they will say this and that but APM Terminals is giving us tough time so the government needs to intervene,” Mamiah Johnson a Broker explained.
