After seven years since Putu cease operations, the Bar wants a determination on whether the agreement is still practically and legally effective; still holds a valid Class “A” license and exploration rights over the designated production area in Grand Gedeh County and whether it is prepared to resume operations. Under the agreement, the Bar stated that Putu obligates to pay US$3 million to the people of Grand Gedeh, River Gee and Sinoe Counties each year as social development contributions. The bar noted that consistent with the provision on environmental assessment, three environmental assessments and audits have not been carried out since 2014, assuming that Putu submitted environmental assessment reports for the five years it operated before closure. The Grand Gedeh lawyers also expressed concern that in the absence of money and roads, the people of Grand Gedeh, mainly those in the immediate vicinity and outside of the production areas are entitled to an environment that supports productive life, free of environmental threats. The Bar, in its review of the 166-page Mineral Development Agreement said it found several other provisions constituting transfer of control, relinquishment and events of company default.

The Editor,Through various broadcasts and reports, it has come to my attention that the Honorable Supreme Court of Liberia has handed down its Opinion, unfavorably to me, in my legal contest of my dismissal and denial of passport by the Liberian Executive. I am also being made to understand that growing out of the same litigation, the court has sanctioned me from the practice of law in the country for a period of a year. On its face, it appears that not only has the court denied my cause, but also, it has effectively denied me an alternative form of livelihood without the benefit of a hearing – an apparent violation of the principles of natural justice. I have requested my lawyers to be served a copy of the Opinion of the Honorable Supreme Court to which I am justly entitled. Isaac W. President George Weah’s administration could come out embolden, if it wins the majority and especially the races in Montserrado, Nimba and Bassa counties. If for any reason, the CPP were to come short, any aspiration to defeat the Weah administration in 2023 will be a pipe dream. In a political landscape where innovative ideas and ideologies are lacking, the process is more or less a beauty contest. Calling on Liberians to vote for legislators to turn Weah into a “benevolent dictator” is at best a reckless statement. Tweah is not just anyone in the Weah administration.

In 1966The UN declared September 8 World Literacy day to focus attention primarily on the millions of adults (people over 16) all over the world who cannot read and write. But if enough of us do just a little bit, Liberia can become a literate country in a few years. Let us make this a Movement – A Literate Liberia Movement. We have an EACH ONE TEACH ONE booklet that will teach literacy in one year. Pastors and Imams please use your pulpits to promote literacy and your churches and mosques to teach literacy classes.

Senator Steve Zargo, speaking to FrontPageAfrica Monday blamed the violence on exuberant partisans who had high expectations and hopes of their individual candidates would emerge victorious. Senator Zargo says he believes that the violence also erupted because state security forces were not adequate enough to match the rival groups causing problems. Said Chair Zargo said he hopes the that the Alternative National Congress accepts the result under the spirit of the CPP and the voter perception survey that informed the engagement. Also notable is that while Taa attended to his injured partisans, an inconspicuous regrouping of the other parties without notice to our candidate took place to announce LP’s candidate, Edith Gongloe Weh as the CPP’s candidate. Mr. Zargo’s comments come as his party’s political leader, Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence (CPP, Grand Bassa) expressed regrets over acts of violence following Sunday’s chaotic end to primary held in Sanniquellie.

The refusal of Madam Gongloe’s team to allow ANC’s candidate to enter the stage was avoidable and should not have happened. We also want to highlight the issue of primary results circulated on social media by other constituent parties’ members from a process which the ANC’s candidate and delegates were not part. In the absence of ANC’s 45 delegates, the other 3 parties equal 135 delegates. Who are the six (6) persons voting for Taa Wongbe when ANC delegates did not return for fear of their lives and were not present? As such, the CPP has no candidate for Nimba county until these issues are addressed.

THE NEWS of notorious armed robber Kesselly Mulbah alias “Kezo” reappearance in the community despite his previous arrest has renewed an unending debate about the flaws of Liberia’s criminal justice system. FROM RAPE TO MURDER, from armed robbery to auto theft, re-offenders are often allowed to slip through the cracks of our criminal justice system. This, we think, is at the fulcrum of the many problems dogging our criminal justice system and one of the reasons why crime persists. WE ARE ALSO AWARE, like most Liberians, that many criminal cases are irritatingly messed up by Police investigators who, according to the criminal justice system of this country, are at the first layer of criminal prosecution. Unless good cause is shown, a court shall dismiss an indictment if the defendant is not tried during the next succeeding term after the finding of the indictment.
