ABUJA – The ECOWAS Court of Justice on Monday, 12th October 2020 launched a process for the standardization of its judgments in order to align its judgment formats with the tradition of other international jurisdictions and reflect its role as an international Court. Justice Asante told the participants, comprising judges and staff of the Court, that the template is envisaged to enable the Court to deliver judgments that contain clearly stated issues, an analysis of relevant facts and law as well as a conclusion that reveals the reasoning process. In order to ensure that the template is aligned with other international jurisdictions, the President said the working paper for the three-day workshop was developed with inspiration from the formats from the International Court of Justice, the Inter American Court of Human Rights, the European Court of Human Rights and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The reality on the ground, he said, is that due to the interplay of different legal traditions and personal preferences of the Judges of the Court, the Court has divergent judgment styles and presentations which is also reflected in the designation of parties before the Court. He said that the impact of the standardization will be far-reaching as it also touches on the public image of the Court, adding that this offers it an excellent opportunity for branding.

The arrival of the vessels had sparked serious concern from small-scale fishers. The vessels would have been capable of taking over 12,000 tonnes of fish a year – nearly twice the nation’s sustainable catch of key species that local fishers depend on. It marks a turning point in the effort to protect West African small-scale fisheries and the ecosystems they depend on. On 12 June, six newly-built supertrawlers arrived in Liberia and promptly applied for licenses to fish in the West African country’s waters. Each supertrawler may be capable of catching over 2,000 tonnes of bottom-dwelling fish species a year, a key catch for local fishers.

MONROVIA – United Bank for Africa Liberia Limited strongly refutes speculations that it has in its possession CCTV footage capturing the death of two employees of the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA). The Bank would like the public to know that while it is true that UBA has CCTV camera on its premises, the location where the bodies of the deceased were found doesn’t fall within the bank’s camera’s range of coverage. As an institution that operates within the confines of the law, UBA would have supported the Government’s investigation efforts by providing such footage, had there been any in its possession. The bank also wishes to make it categorically clear that at no point in time has any of its staff members been harassed or intimidated by State Security Operatives to produce footage from the bank’s CCTV coverage, as it is also being speculated.
