Analysts predicted that Mr. Bathily might be targeting September or October, at the latest, for voting to take place. Sounding so optimistic, he even predicted that the elusive election laws could be achieved by June. The big sticking point, among others, has always been election laws and eligibility of contestants, particularly for the position of president. The proposed panel is supposed to include some 150 social and political leaders to come together and draft the required election laws. Tested ideas can only be repeated if they have enough factional support to succeed; however, this is not the case with Mr. Bathily.

Libya has started to deport 270 illegal migrants intercepted in the country en route to Europe. Al-Tarabelsi on Wednesday also pledged to fight illegal migration and human smuggling in Libya, slamming that the illicit business puts migrants in peril at sea. He added that Libya as a migrant transit point has borne the high price of "sheltering and aiding" illegal migrants after they were intercepted, reports Xinhua. Illegal migrants, mostly Africans, have taken advantage of insecurity and chaos in Libya since 2011 to cross the Mediterranean sea from the country to European shores. So far in 2023, a total of 10,646 illegal migrants have been rescued and sheltered in Libya, according to the International Organization for Migration.

Oil prices held steady on Wednesday after rising over 1% in the previous session, on a stronger dollar and as investors remained firm after jitters arising from supply cuts from Saudi Arabia and Russia. Brent crude futures were up by 10 cents to $90.14 a barrel at 1346 GMT. A stronger dollar can weigh on oil demand by making the fuel more expensive for holders of other currencies. REUTERS/REUTERS PHOTOGRAPHER Acquire Licensing RightsReflecting near-term supply concerns, front-month Brent futures had traded on Wednesday near 9-month highs at $4.13 a barrel above prices in six months. Saudi Arabia and Russia on Tuesday extended their voluntary oil cuts to the end of the year, the former to the tune of 1 million barrels per day (bpd) and the latter by 300,000 bpd.
