From its new strongholds on the Libyan coast, Russian Kalibr cruise missiles could hit almost any target in Western Europe. May was Russia’s bloodiest month in its 28-month war against Ukraine — 38,940 soldiers dead or seriously wounded. In Eastern Libya, the local leader, General Khalifa Haftar, reportedly profits from sending boatloads of African migrants north. Wagner, the Russian mercenary group, has largely been replaced by Russian soldiers answering to Russia’s Defense Ministry. Last month, on a visit to eastern Libya, Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, said Russia plans to open a consulate in Benghazi.

Rescue charity recovers 11 bodies from sea off LibyaA charity rescue ship recovered the bodies of 11 migrants off the coast of Libya on Friday after saving more than 160 people from boats close to the North African country, the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) group said. However, they also plucked the bodies of 11 people who were seen by a spotter plane floating in the sea. The Sea Watch group, whose plane saw the bodies, said they tried to contact Libya‘s coast guard to go and retrieve the dead, but received no reply. Italy has urged Tunisia and Libya to do more to stop would-be migrants from putting to sea. It has also clamped down on the operations of rescue ships, saying they encourage people to head to Europe – a charge the charities deny.

ROME: The bodies of 11 people, believed to be migrants, were retrieved off the Libyan coast on Friday, the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) NGO said on X. “Sadly, after a search operation that lasted over nine hours, GeoBarents team retrieved the bodies of 11 people who unfortunately lost their lives,” MSF said. MSF had been alerted to the corpses by German NGO Sea-Watch, which said earlier on Friday it had spotted the 11 bodies in the water. “During today’s flight with our Seabird, the crew spotted 11 bodies,” said Sea-Watch, which also rescues migrants in the Mediterranean. “It is unclear whether the bodies discovered off the Libyan coast were victims of a previously unknown shipwreck.”While out searching for the bodies, MSF sighted a boat and rescued the 20 people aboard, it said.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Spain will ask a United Nations court for permission to join South Africa’s case accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza, its foreign minister announced Thursday. Spain is the first European country to take the step after South Africa filed its case with the International Court of Justice late last year. It alleged that Israel was breaching the genocide convention in its military assault that has laid waste to large swaths of Gaza. Once admitted to the case, Spain would be able to make written submissions and speak at public hearings. Slovenia, a European Union member along with Spain and Ireland, followed suit and recognized the Palestinian state this week.

Libya national team coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic. “We’re all happy with the fact Africa has now got, effectively, nine-and-a-half places at World Cup 2026,” Micho tells The National. The first set of World Cup assignments kept the dream nourished, not least a stirring comeback to draw with Cameroon in Benghazi. “It could be judged as meaning less space for young Libyan players,” acknowledges Micho.

By EDITH M. LEDERERDeep divisions especially among the world’s most powerful nations have significantly undermined what the United Nations can do to help nations move from conflict to peace, the U.N. peacekeeping chief said. Twenty years ago, Lacroix said, a united international community pushed in the same direction as the United Nations to restore peace to East Timor, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Cambodia. Today, there are about 80,000 military and civilians in 11 peacekeeping operations. He warned that these divisions are undermining the cornerstone of the United Nations – having all countries work together to solve global challenges. The United Nations has no standing military force, and its peacekeepers who wear distinctive blue berets or helmets are contributed by member nations.
