‘’Clean water is key factor for economic growth; deteriorating water quality is stalling economic growth, worsening health conditions, reducing food production, and exacerbating poverty in many countries’’, wrote the World Bank Group President David Malpass. The United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund{UNICEF} observed on WWD 2024 that about 133 million Nigerians lacked access to potable water, water that is treated for bacteria, toxic chemicals, viruses and fecal matter. Yet Nigeria has significant total water resources reportedly estimated at 215 billion m’3 (cubic kilometers) of surface waterand 87 billion m’3 ground water resources. It is clear that the nation is suffering from ‘’economic water scarcity’’- the inability to properly manage, use and protect water resources for socio-economic development and environmental sustainability. The Western world is using African water resources in mining, and in oil and gas exploitation without thinking about water pollution.

To that extent, the recent return to the old national anthem, which President Bola Tinubu considered desirable for the country currently under his charge, is not a bad development. As an encapsulation of both the vision and the mission of a nation, ‘a national anthem is one of the instruments of modern government’, according to Professor Dan Izevbaye et al. This may explain Tinubu’s long expressed interest in the content of Nigeria’s national anthem. To that extent, we agree with the president’s position, but we do not agree with the process by which he achieved the return to the old anthem. Akinwale lamented that for the second time in Nigeria’s history, a few persons changed the national anthem without carrying the people along.

Comeback hoop Nathan Punch has ridden his first winner in 22 months at Pakenham on Monday, steering Brian McGrath's $56 shot Ellmaknifico to an upset victory. However, after a few setbacks, Punch resumed riding in jumpouts in early March and was back race-riding a fortnight later. The victory was comfortable on the line and naturally a very special one for Punch, who was delighted to notch a winner for McGrath. Punch was disappointed with how Ellmaknifico's luckless last start panned out but was left confident the six-year-old could go close stepping up a furlong on Monday. I came here confident, on what he did last week, that stepping up to 1400 metres he'd be strong."

Nigeria’s mobile phone users are sounding the alarm as their data disappears at a worrisome rate, sparking frustration and suspicion. One particularly troubling case involves the Signal app, where users have reported significant data usage without any clear cause. The Consumer Affairs Bureau of the Nigerian Communications Commission has identified seven factors causing data depletion for mobile subscribers in Nigeria. They advised users to regularly monitor their data usage, disable background data for specific apps, and turn off automatic updates. Additionally, the Commission suggested that mobile users disable location services for certain apps, as these can consume significant amounts of data.

The insurance industry, according to experts, is on the verge of a seismic, tech-driven shift. In many ways, Artificial intelligence (AI) can help the insurance industry grow. The notion that the deployment of AI in the insurance industry would displace human workers is an important concern. AI does have the potential to automate some tasks that humans currently perform in the insurance industry, which could lead to job displacement. Some insurance industry roles that may be affected by AI include claims adjusters and underwriters risk analysts.

The call is coming as the controversy over the recruitment of Constables into the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) between the office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Police Service Commission (PSC) over alleged corruption in the exercise rages on. The call was made by a group known as North-East Youth and Elders Peoples Forum (NEYEPF) which addressed a press conference in Bauchi on Sunday. The findings underscore the importance of robust password management, as the majority of reviewed passwords were easily compromised using smart guessing algorithms. “The majority of the examined passwords (57 per cent) contain a word from the dictionary, which significantly reduces the passwords’ strength. Standard passwords: “password”, “qwerty12345”, “admin”, “12345”, “team,” the report highlighted. “Given that, the most dependable solution is to generate a completely random password using modern and reliable password managers. Such apps as Kaspersky Password Manager can securely store large volumes of data, providing comprehensive and robust protection for user information,” commented Novikova.

But I am, right now, just sick and tired of being sick and tired. Meanwhile, Kano State governor Abba Yusuf (who I used to like)has reverted to his default destructive vengeance that I advised him against in previous columns. He has reportedly sent bulldozers to tear down the palace where the “federal” emir lives. Well, the law is clearly on the side of the Kano State government on the controversy regarding who is the emir of Kano. So, the Kano State government just needs a little more maturity to let the judicial process play itself out.
