Kano govt to pay N6bn death benefits, pension gratuity next week
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf has announced that the government has allocated a substantial sum of N6 billion to make partial payments towards the death benefits and pension gratuity owed to more than 5,500 retired civil servants in the state. The beneficiaries of these benefits will primarily be retirees at lower grade levels, with amounts ranging from N1 million downwards. “I am constantly thinking about the issue of gratuities for retired civil servants. During these meetings, we decided to start by paying those with lower grade levels whose entitlements have not exceeded N1 million or are just slightly above N1 million, down to around N150,000 or N250,000. Governor Yusuf has also reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of both current workers and retired civil servants in the state.

People living with disabilities lament palliatives delay
Northern Nigeria Disability Forum has expressed dissatisfaction over the continued delay in releasing government palliatives to its members. He disclosed that they had not heard any provision or an agency that they could meet to apply for palliatives as persons with disabilities. Chuanoemoh, who disclosed this in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, stated that PLWDs members had not received palliatives up to this moment. Zamfara: Bandits after emir’s life kill five, market shut
The Emir of Maru in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Abubakar Maigari, escaped lynching when bandits in large numbers invaded his palace in an attempt to kill him. Bawa said, “The bandits invaded the Emir’s Palace and opened fire sporadically in an attempt to kill the Emir but he escaped mysteriously. They killed one of the palace guards and damaged all the vehicles in that place. Their funeral prayers have been conducted today Friday according to Islamic injunction.”Meanwhile, the state government has announced the closure of the popular Maru market for fear that the bandits could attack the people today Friday being the market day. In a statement, the state Commissioner of Information, Munnir Haidara, said, “Following the security situation in Maru town the state government has closed down the Maru market until the security situation is improved.”

Eagles maintain 40th position in FIFA rankings
Despite recording a win and a draw in their last friendly games during the international break, their only games since the last FIFA world rankings in September, Nigeria remained unmoved in the latest FIFA men’s rankings for October, The PUNCH reports. Though the Super Eagles gained 1.62 points in the month under review to take their total point to 1490.48, they, however, maintained their position at 40th place. Still, the results did not have much effect on their position on the rankings table. The major reason for this drop was suggested to be their non-participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. They ranked 29 in the previous rankings but in the update released by FIFA on Thursday, they now occupy the 32nd position in the world.

Polaris Bank, in partnership with Evolve Charity, has said the girl-child impacts society positively. A statement by the bank said in support of the ‘Girl-Child Education Project’, Polaris Bank, in partnership with Evolve Charity, a non-profit organisation, presented educational materials to more than 400 students in Ikeja and Surulere areas of Lagos State. The donated materials which include; school uniforms, school bags, pens, sandals, and various books, were presented to the students of both Opebi Junior Secondary School, Opebi, Ikeja Lagos, Gbaja Junior Girls High School, and Gbaja Senior Girls High School, at their school premises in Surulere. BREAKING: S’Court failed Nigerians, judgment disappointing — PDP – Punch Newspapers
The Peoples Democratic Party has described the Supreme Court judgment as disappointing. The PUNCH reports that the apex court upheld the judgment of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal affirming the victory of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission. S’Court dismisses Atiku, Obi’s appeals, affirms Tinubu’s election – Punch Newspapers
The Supreme Court has affirmed the decision of the tribunal on Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi’s appeals. The apex court affirmed that other panel members agreed with the lead judgment delivered by John Okoro, dismissing Atiku Abubakar’s appeal and challenging the judgment of the presidential petition tribunal. They also agreed with Okoro to reject the application of Atiku, seeking to present Tinubu’s credentials obtained from the CSU. Supreme Court dismisses Atiku, Obi’s appeal against Tinubu’s election
The apex court also stated that Atiku did not produce alternative results of the presidential election that showed that he won a majority of votes cast to rebuff the one declared by INEC. According to Justice Okoro, the appellants have not demonstrated why the Supreme Court should interfere with the decision of the lower court and resolve all seven issues raised for the determination of the court against the appellants. The judgement of the lower court is hereby affirmed; I make no order as to cost”, Justice Okoro held. Earlier, the courtdismissed Atiku’s motion seeking leave of court to file fresh evidence in his appeal against Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 presidential election. “The Constitution does not permit that, and this court has no jurisdiction to grant the filing of fresh evidence that was not pleaded at the lower court”.
