Kuti, Udoaka move up in ITTF rankings
Newly-crowned West African champions Matthew Kuti and Hope Udoaka are the biggest movers in Week 18 of the 2024 ITTF rankings released by the world body, The PUNCH reports. Kuti, who defeated most of the experienced players in the region to become the new regional champion, moved up by 750 steps in the men’s singles to be ranked 185 in the world — his career best in the world ratings. Udoaka, on her part, gained 365 steps to be ranked 173 globally and the fourth-best Nigerian female player in the world after Offiong Edem, Fatimo Bello and Tosin Oribamise. Her upward movement comes after she posted a flawless display to win the women’s singles title at the 2024 ITTF West Africa Regional Championships in Lome, Togo last weekend. Like Kuti, Muiz Adegoke also gained 591 steps up the ladder to occupy the 332nd spot in the world rankings.

IATA releases report on aviation contrails, climate effect
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has called for urgent action to deepen the understanding on the formation and climate impact of aviation contrails to develop effective mitigation measures. The newly released IATA report on Aviation Contrails and their Climate Effect: Tackling Uncertainties and Enabling Solutions, called for a strengthening of collaboration between research and technological innovation, coupled with policy frameworks to address aviation’s non-CO2 emissions through more atmospheric data. The report highlighted the complexity of contrail science, noting gaps in the understanding of how contrails form, or when they could persist, and how they impact the climate. To ensure that this effort is effective and without adverse effects, we must better understand how and where contrails form and shrink the uncertainties related to their climate impact. “Action now” means more trials, collection of more data, improvement of climate models, and maturing technologies and operations.

At least 24 killed in South China highway collapse
Twenty-four people have died after a section of a mountainside highway collapsed in China’s Guangdong province, following days of heavy rain. State media initially reported that 19 people had died but local authorities later said 24 people had been killed, with the number of injured persons still at 30. No comment: Maersk declines to confirm presidency’s $600m seaport investment claim
Danish shipping and logistics company, A.P Moller-Maersk, has avoided comments on a supposed investment in Nigeria’s seaport infrastructure totalling $600 million. Last Sunday, President Bola Tinubu and the company’s Chairman, Robert Uggla, held closed-door talks on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Special Meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. However, we are not able to comment on any investment talks.”While reacting to several media reports that Maersk denied such a million-dollar investment in Nigeria, Tinubu’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, late Tuesday, said the company hasn’t denied the FG’s statements. Olusegun, who tweets with the username @DOlusegun on X.com, wrote, “The media’s headline choice sparked controversy, not Maersk’s. Nigeria's VAT collection, lowest in Africa

Sixteen Nigerian soldiers have been killed on a mission to halt clashes between two communities in the southern state of Delta, an army spokesman said on Saturday.
