The beneficiary of an invidious promotion to public office owes his duty or allegiance only to his appointor. Sensitive public positions have been allocated to kins, tribesmen and clients most times in utter disregard of the requirement of an underlying pre qualification for the positions or of cognate or relevant experience therefore. The nation is however the ultimate loser as she is denied the effective and efficient labour of her rigorous and shrewd body of candidates for public office. It is a moot point whether Tinubu can reverse the trend or, put differently, whether Tinubu can fight corruption.

ILO begins move to tackle child labour in agriculture
The International Labour Organisation (ILO), in collaboration with the United States Department of Labour (USDOL), has expressed commitment to creating an effective action plan to tackle child labour in agriculture using a Comprehensive Monitoring and Evaluation Plan (CMEP). Project director of Action against Child Labour in Agriculture in West Africa (ACLAWA), Agatha Kolawole, while speaking during a three-day workshop in Akure, the Ondo state capital, revealed the commitment to developing the Comprehensive Monitoring and Evaluation Plan (CMEP) for the ILO Action against Child Labour in Agriculture in West Africa. In Ondo State, a significant cocoa producer in Nigeria, the ACLAWA project led by Kolawole aims to eradicate child labour in cocoa farming. She said: “I would like to express sincere appreciation for the robust collaboration between the ILO and the Ondo State Steering Committee on Child Labour. “While progress is evident, much work remains to eradicate child labour in West African agriculture.

Plateau Assembly: Crisis looms as sacked PDP lawmakers vow to resume plenary
Plateau State House of Assembly may be thrown into confusion on Tuesday as the 16 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who were sacked by the Court of Appeal have vowed to resume legislative duties on Tuesday. Addressing newsmen in Jos, Plateau State on Monday, the spokesman of the group, Hon Ishaku Maren, advised All Progressives Congress (APC) not to go near the House of Assembly because the Supreme Court by its pronouncement had invalidated the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which sacked them. According to him, as law-abiding citizens, they are ready to resume work to represent the people who duly elected them. “You might be aware that while we were on recess, there were two Judgments that were passed regarding the status of the state House of Assembly and Plateau State as a whole. “By that it shows that we are also referring to the same judgment that one cannot build something on nothing,” he said.

At least eight dead, dozens missing in China landslide
At least eight people have died and dozens are still missing after a landslide struck China’s southwestern province of Yunnan. The landslide in Zhaotong City happened at 05:51 local time (21:51 GMT) on Monday, trapping 47 people. This decision lacks consideration for the significant investments made by manufacturers, retailers, and wholesalers of these products, potentially causing severe economic implications. I believe that a more sustainable and phased-out approach should be adopted to address the environmental challenges posed by single-use plastics. Collaboration with StakeholdersEngage stakeholders, including manufacturers, retailers, environmental experts, and community representatives, to develop a holistic and inclusive strategy. Therefore, I urge the Lagos state government and the reactionary commissioner of environment to reconsider the abrupt ban and collaborate with stakeholders to develop a more comprehensive and sustainable approach to address the issue of plastic pollution in Lagos State.
