A former property agent admitted at a court that he had deceived a bank and the Hong Kong Mortgage Corporation Limited into granting him a mortgage loan of about HK$4.9 million by making false representations. The 38-year-old defendant Chiu Ka-wai pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud at the District Court on Monday. Under the MIP, banks could provide a maximum 80 percent loan-to-value ratio to a self-occupancy residential property valued at HK$6 million and below. Had HSBC, the HKMC and the HKMCI known that the information provided by the defendant was false, they would not have maintained the mortgage loan granted to him.

The vulnerable population will always be the target of higher risk of severe cases and this is where we should focus – on protecting the vulnerable population,” Solante said in a television interview last Saturday. He stressed that the vulnerable population such as the elderly, those with comorbidities, and the immuno-compromised are at higher risk of severe COVID-19 infection and death. Also, the campaign for the general population to get a booster and for the vulnerable population to get a second booster must continue, he said.

'Ideology of hate' consuming India, says Gandhi's great-grandsonIn this 2019 handout photo, then-Indian President Ram Nath Kovind speaks at Miriam College in Quezon City to unveil the first Mahatma Gandhi monument in the Philippines. MUMBAI, India — India's rising tide of Hindu nationalism is an affront to the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, his great-grandson says, ahead of the 75th anniversary of the revered independence hero's assassination. "That whole philosophy has now captured India and Indian hearts, the ideology of hate, the ideology of polarization, the ideology of divisions," he told AFP at his Mumbai home. Modi has regularly paid respect to Gandhi's legacy but has refrained from weighing in on the campaign to rehabilitate his killer. "The poison is so deep, and they're so successful, that I don't see my ideology triumphing over in India for a long time now," he says.

Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos has approved a value-added tax refund programme for foreign tourists by 2024 to attract more visitors, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said on Sunday. The plan is to allow foreigners to get a VAT refund on items they are taking out of the Philippines, similar to what many other countries offer. The Philippines recorded 2.65 million international visitors last year, who brought in an estimated $3.68 billion in revenue, exceeding its 2022 target of 1.7 million tourists, according to the Department of Tourism. Last year's total comprised of 2.02 million foreign nationals and 628,445 Filipinos based abroad, which compared with only 163,879 tourists recorded in 2021 and was still significantly lower than the pre-pandemic annual level of 8.26 million. The government aims to boost visitor arrivals this year to 4.8 million tourists.
