One silver lining is the implications for sea level rise, projected to be among the most devastating consequences of global warming. Throughout the 20th century, melting glaciers was one of the main causes of rising ocean levels, along with the expansion of sea water as it warms. Like thick syrupThe new estimate lowers the potential contribution of glaciers to sea level rise from about 33 to 26 centimeters (13 to 10 inches). The kilometers-thick blankets of ice atop West Antarctica and Greenland hold enough frozen water to lift oceans some 13 meters. “We generally think about glaciers as solid ice that may melt in summer, but ice actually flows like thick syrup under its own weight,” said Morlighem.

■ Raise the salary and benefits of health workers; offer them more incentives for staying in the country. ■ Sustain the current government thrust in infrastructure development, but shift from “Build, Build, Build” to public-private partnership to encourage more private sector investments and help the government minimize expenditure. ■ Continue Duterte’s “Build, Build, Build” program; upgrade aging seaports, airports and railways to make the country a major logistic hub in Asia; modernize the Pasig River ferry system. ■ Create a national program for the unemployed where those who were displaced from their jobs will receive aid equivalent to three months of their salary to tide them over. ■ Continue the “Build Build Build” program but with a stronger focus on rural development and creation of “green” jobs aligned with efforts addressing climate change.

'Real name' social media registration seen to risk free speech, privacy and identityThe proposed "SIM Card Registration Act", already ratified by Congress and waiting for President Rodrigo Duterte, has a provision stating that "all social media account providers shall require [the] real name and phone number [of a user] upon creation of account." Bahaghari's Valmores-Salinas is very certain that the SIM Card Registration Act will be used alongside the Anti-Terrorism Act, which will further restrict the democratic space. IDLIB: A group led by Syria's former Al-Qaida affiliate on Sunday denied it knew the head of the Islamic State group, killed in a US raid, lived in an area under its control. IS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi blew himself up Thursday during the nighttime raid on his house in Syria's northwest region of Idlib, which is mostly dominated by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) jihadist group, an IS rival. "We condemn this (US) operation," the group added, saying it would continue to "fight against vices and crime." HTS occasionally carries out operations against IS-affiliated cells in the region — Syria's last main jihadist and rebel bastion, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. In recent years, HTS has tried to cast itself as a more moderate player focused only on Syrian matters and condemning international terrorism.

VIENNA — Nine people died in three days during which more than 100 avalanches struck Austria, authorities said Sunday. Most of the avalanches hit the western Tyrol region and Friday alone saw five fatalities, rescue services said. Further west, an experienced skier of 43 was killed in the popular Vorarlberg region as Austria saw exceptional quantities of snow fall going into and across the weekend. Recent years have seen avalanches claim around 20 lives a year in Austria, fewer over the past two years after the pandemic vastly reduced the numbers of skiers. On Thursday, one person died and several others were injured in avalanches in Switzerland’s Graubunden region, which borders Austria’s Tyrol.
