Returning Batanes resident dies from COVID-19; fellow plane passengers quarantined
ITBAYAT, Batanes––An 80-year-old man returning to this town died Sunday, Jan. 16, after testing positive for COVID-19, raising the number of deaths in this province to six. The man flew to Batanes on a Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight from Manila on Jan. 15. House resumes session under strict protocols
THE House of Representatives will resume its regular session today, January 17, under tight health and safety precautions amid the wave of the highly contagious Omicron coronavirus variant. The House will adjourn on February 5 in time for the beginning of the campaign period for candidates for national positions on February 8. "We only have three weeks or nine session days to finish some priority measures before we adjourn for the election period," Velasco said. Under the system, only 20 percent of the staff in each department and office in the House will be allowed to report for work. The sessions will take place from Monday to Wednesday, with just a small number of House members and secretariat present in the plenary hall.

Tsunami reaches Japan, 3-meter waves possible—meteorological agency
TOKYO — Tsunami reached Japan late Saturday through early Sunday, and waves as high as three meters were possible, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, hours after a massive volcanic eruption near Tonga. The agency said a 1.2 meter (about four feet) tsunami reached the remote southern island of Amami Oshima around 11:55 pm (1455 GMT) Saturday before other areas along Japan’s Pacific coast observed smaller tsunami. The government last year completed an order of 16 S-70i Black Hawks to replace the air force's fleet of Bell UH-1H helicopters, commonly known as the Huey, after fatal accidents. Streamline procedures to speed up land development: DAB
Duplicating procedures in land development should be streamlined while some of the process should start simultaneously to cut short the process time by half, lawmaker Edward Lau Kwok-fan says. In a press briefing on Sunday, Lau from the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong said amending the law to cut “red tapes” as current land development procedures are too complicated. He therefore proposed the government combine multiple consultations into two to expedite the land development process. “When we are developing these mega development plans, we can actually just do two rounds of public consultations,” Lau said. He also suggested improving the compensation mechanism to reduce conflicts and step up flexibility in planning land usage, including implementing a “white zone” land use -- allowing the market instead of the government to decide the usage of the land plot.
