Mr Wang’s visit is crucial as it comes during Sri Lanka’s worst financial crisis, with inflation rising to record levels, food prices soaring and foreign exchange reserves running dry. The Sri Lankan President asked China for help in restructuring debt repayments, and a concessional trade credit scheme for imports. In October last year, the Sri Lankan authorities asked India for a credit of US$500 million for fuel. The Sri Lankan commercial high court blocked payment for it and, in turn, China blacklisted the Sri Lankan state bank. Sri Lanka’s central bank has repeatedly assured all debt repayments will be met and said funds for the January ISB has already been allocated.

A doctor who failed to use the LeaveHomeSafe app when attending a controversial birthday party last Monday got salty when a radio program host asked him about it. Dr Daniel Chu Wai-sing accused Commercial Radio to have "spread hatred" when he was questioned about not using the app as required by law. As of Monday, at least two Covid-19 cases were detected at the party, according to health officials. “I am not trying to play down the fall out of the party…but people are missing the main point of this incident. People should talk about the anti-pandemic measures with some 30 cases diagnosed lately, instead of focusing on the party,” said Chu.

"What the mayors agreed on was that we will maintain Alert Level 3, and we will continuously monitor specifically [utilization] rates, but for the meantime the mayors see no need to raise to Alert Level 4," MMDA chairman Benhur Abalos told reporters at a press briefing Monday morning. This was because, Abalos said, the vaccination rate in the National Capital Region is "more than 100%" while the bed utilization rate in hospitals remains stable despite the ongoing surge. Under the pandemic task force's alert level system, Alert Level 4 is declared where cases are high and increasing, and hospital bed and intensive care utilization are high. The stricter alert level limits indoor capacity for businesses and venues to 10% and 30% outdoors. Asked how long the recommendation to retain Alert Level 3 would hold weight, Abalos said: "We really cannot tell, but we are continuously monitoring these.

Initially, Patafa ruled to expel Mr. Obiena from the national training pool, but it later deferred that decision. The settlement may have been late, but Mr. Obiena did not apparently lose or squander the money somewhere else. Second question: how many Patafa athletes are actually like Mr. Obiena, tasked with handling millions of pesos, converted into euros or liras? Blame gameEven if we accept Patafa's accusations against Mr. Obiena, why did it agree to that arrangement in the first place? So, was Mr. Obiena put in a doomed arrangement?

MANILA (Philippine Daily Inquirer/Asia News Network): A nationwide gun ban ordered by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) took effect at midnight of Sunday (Jan 9), which also marked the official start of the 150-day election period. The Comelec suspended all firearms licenses and permits to carry firearms outside of residence during this period. 10741 issued last December, only firearms owners who have secured a certificate of authority from the poll body’s committee on the ban on firearms and security concerns are exempted from the ban. The Philippine National Police, meanwhile, reminded cops that exemptions from the gun ban for authorities were not absolute. Carlos affirmed that persons found carrying firearms would be asked to show their Comelec-issued certificate of authority exempting them from the gun ban.
