KHARTOUM, Sudan — Sudanese authorities released Al Jazeera television’s Khartoum bureau chief on Tuesday, the Qatar-based network said, two days after security forces arrested him from his home. Kabbashi, a Sudanese citizen, “was released on Tuesday… the military has yet to give a reason for his detention,” the network said. Late Monday, Al Jazeera reported that Kabbashi had been taken to prison despite a prosecutor’s order for his release. The internet has remained largely cut in Sudan despite a court order last week to restore services. The army’s power grab has derailed a transition to full civilian rule, sparked international condemnation and provoked regular protests.

No surpriseThe Marcos-Duterte tandem did not come as a surprise to people close to the camps of Bongbong Marcos and Inday Sara Duterte. After all, Bongbong Marcos and Martin Romualdez are first cousins. Ejercito and Jinggoy, who were both senators; Sen. Pia Cayetano and Taguig Congressman Alan Peter Cayetano, children of the late former Senate president Rene Cayetano. The many highways and bridges built, the structures that sprouted and have now become icons are hallmarks of the Philippine landscape: Cultural Center of the Philippines, Film Center, Philippine International Convention Center, Lung Center, Kidney Center, Heart Center, among many others. He would not have been elected by his peers as Senate President if he didn’t have that charisma.

A hundred public schools in lower-risk areas are holding classes in person for a two-month pilot run, with the reopening of more dependent on vaccination rates and a sustained decline in Covid-19 cases. The Philippines, which had imposed some of the world's longest lockdowns, is among the last countries to reopen schools, in stark contrast to many western countries. Authorities have reduced class sizes by half and allowed only vaccinated teachers and school personnel to interact with students. Photos shared on social media showed students wearing masks and inside classrooms with chairs and tables separated by plastic sheets, while hand-washing stations were installed. The United Nations children's agency UNICEF has backed the Philippines' phased, voluntary and safe reopening of schools, as it has warned the "learning crisis could turn into a learning catastrophe".

Moreno pointed out that recovering, rehabilitating, and protecting the country’s natural resources are investments into the country’s natural capital assets that are critical in the country’s post-coronavirus recovery plan and development future. He also highlighted the need for trilateral cooperation between LGUs, indigenous peoples, and local communities for the protection and preservation of some 4.5 million hectares of key terrestrial and coastal/marine biodiversity conservation areas.
