The raid was carried out by the Kalutara Divisional Crime Investigation Unit. During the interrogation of the suspect, it has been revealed that the suspect is a disciple of the drug dealer Salidu. A few weeks ago, a Sub Inspector of Police was arrested while transporting a consignment of narcotics. Meanwhile, the Navy arrested a suspect with 97 kilograms of Kerala cannabis off the Kovil coast.

Another batch of Russia’s Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine, also known as Gam-COVID-Vac, has arrived in Sri Lanka early this morning (July 07). The vaccine consignment containing 50,000 doses have been handed over to the State Pharmaceutical Corporation (SPC) at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake. Prior to the delivery of this consignment, Russia had sent three stocks of Sputnik V jabs within the last two months. The first batch containing 50,000 doses arrived on May 04 followed by the second batch comprising 50,000 doses on May 27. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) are still reviewing Sputnik V for final approval.

Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund, Mubadala Investment Company, had already committed to invest £800 million in the UK life sciences industry. The vision will also look at immune therapies such as cancer vaccines and seek to maintain the UK's position in vaccine discovery, development and manufacturing, while reducing illness and death from respiratory disease.

The 2022 ICC U-19 World Cup, a limited-overs tournament, is scheduled to be held in the West Indies, reportedly early next year with 16 teams taking part. The amendments seek to make it obligatory for magistrates to visit police stations and other detention centres and ascertain whether the detainees are properly treated. However, the parliamentary Opposition criticised the motives of the Government, labelling the amendments “window dressing” and claiming the Government has no “genuine” interest in reforming the law. Sumanthiran said his party welcomes all amendments which seek to make it obligatory for magistrates to visit police stations and other detention centres and ascertain whether the detainees are properly treated. However, he questioned as to why the “window dressing” is made at the current time and sought clarifications on a mechanism which would ensure that magistrates would properly inspect prisons. “This rejection shows that the Government is not serious or genuine about making these legal reforms,” said Rahman.

A BBC documentary has revealed how forensic evidence played a vital role in securing the convictions of three men involved in a double crossbow murder. Saghawat Ramzan was also convicted of accidentally murdering his own brother Waseem Ramzan, who was shot by a bolt from the same weapon aimed at Mr Douglas. Investigators discovered the body of a 19-year-old man, who they later discover to be Mr Douglas, quickly noticing he had highly unusual injuries. A second bolt travelling at 270ft-per-second was fired at 19-year-old Mr Douglas less than a minute later, causing fatal internal injuries. With the group of burglars still in the house, Saghawat Ramzan is seen firing the larger crossbow at one of their drivers.

New Country Representative of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to Sri Lanka Christian Skoog has presented his credentials to Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, yesterday (July 05) at the Foreign Ministry. Accepting credentials, Minister Gunawardena recalled that the UNICEF’s cooperation with Sri Lanka supporting the rights and wellbeing of children, since the early 1950’s. Minister Gunawardena acknowledged with appreciation the outstanding work carried out by the UNICEF in Sri Lanka and particularly its efforts to seek empower, educate and enable Sri Lanka’s children to become the agents of change who drive national development into the future. He also commented the UNICEF’s COVID-19 response and social protection. Minister Gunawardena expressed hope that the ongoing excellent cooperation between the Sri Lankan government and the UNICEF will be further strengthened during the term of the new UNICEF Country Representative.

National Intellectuals’ Organisation (NIO) Chairman Prof. Chandana Abeyratne said the proposed Bill is a death blow to free education and called upon everybody who has received a free education to defeat it. However, under the proposed Bill, the KDNU is under the Defence Ministry, with no oversight of the Education Ministry. We do not mind the Defence Ministry handling syllabuses for defence-related fields in whatever way they see fit. Meanwhile, the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) held protests in a number of districts last week against the proposed KNDU Bill.
