Sri Lanka Navy has suspended the service of the naval surgeon who was arrested over procuration of a 15-year-old girl. The naval surgeon in question had been taken into custody on Tuesday (July 06). Accordingly, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenna has ordered to suspend the service of the said officer with effect from today (July 07). Meanwhile, the Navy will be conducting a separate internal investigation into the incident at the behest of naval commander, it read further. Further, she has directed the Child & Women Bureau to apprehend all suspects linked to the crime regardless of their status.

Following the X-Press Pearl container ship disaster, Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) Chairperson Mrs. Dharshani Lahandapura confirmed to The Morning today (07) that Sri Lanka has received the interim claim of Rs. 720 million. Speaking further, she elaborated that these funds will be used to make up for the direct costs incurred by the government due to the tragedy. Arrangements are being made to use seaweed to produce fertilizers and nitrogen solutions required for organic farming stated the State Minister of Fisheries Kanchana Wijesekara today (07). Under the Livelihood Development Program, it is planned to provide assistance to 200 beneficiaries to commence seaweed cultivation this year. At present, it has been identified that these seaweeds can be used for the production of organic fertilizer. A discussion was held recently with these seaweed exporters on how to use seaweed for future organic fertilizer production. The Minister said that arrangements will be made to use seaweed to produce fertilizers and nitrogen liquids required for organic farming.

Another individual has been arrested on Tuesday (July 06) in connection with the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks, DIG Ajith Rohana said. The suspect was identified as a 32-year-old resident of Mawanella area. The law enforcement authorities will detain the suspect under the provisions of Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) for further interrogation, DIG Rohana stated/. Prior to the attacks, Zahran Hashim, one of the main perpetrators of the Easter Sunday bombings, had conducted series of lectures on extremist ideologies and Wahhabism with the assistance of Muslim youths in various parts of the country. The police are carrying out investigations to apprehend those who organized and taught in these classes, DIG Rohana said further.

The Committee also observed that a senior management officer serving in Sri Lankan Airlines as on 31st March 2021 receives a monthly salary of Rs. 02 million, another 142 pilots, 12 aeronautical engineers, 09 engineering managers and 3 top management officers of Sri Lankan Airlines receive a monthly salary of between Rs. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa revealed that there is an alleged conspiracy afoot by the government to silence the media. “There is an attempt to suppress a leading media network in the country,” he said while noting that top individuals in government have been conspiring against the said network with groups of lawyers.
