The Ministry of Environment is focusing on implementing an alternative program to prevent 750 ml plastic bottles from entering the environment. The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) says banning plastic bottles is impractical. Therefore, it proposes that consumers who purchase 750 ml plastic bottles must keep a monetary recycling deposit. Several related products have already been banned. The reason many of these polythene and plastic products are banned is because they are manufactured materials that have eco-friendly and easily biodegradable alternatives.

Navy seizes 237 kg of Kerala Cannabis in Point Pedro
Sri Lanka Navy has seized 237 kilograms and 500 grams of Kerala Cannabis during a special operation conducted in seas North of Point Pedro today (June 14). Accordingly, the entire operation led to the seizure of nearly 237kg and 500g (in wet weight) of Kerala cannabis in 08 sacks. It is suspected that the consignment of Kerala cannabis was transferred to the dinghy at the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) with the intention of smuggling them into the island. The suspects held during this operation were residents of Point Pedro and Achchuweli from 28 to 29 years of age. The suspects together with the Kerala cannabis and the dinghy will be handed over to the Kankesanturai Police for onward legal action.

According to the Gulf Business news, Bahrain has temporarily halted the issuance of new work permits for people from ‘red list’ countries due to the coronavirus pandemic. Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal are among the ‘red list’ countries. Bahrain had suspended the entry of travellers coming from the countries rostered on the red list, namely India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal, on all flights starting from Monday, May 24, 2021. Vietnam was added to the kingdom’s travel red list, effective June 1, 2021.

India to recalibrate ties with Sri Lanka as Colombo ‘sways towards China’
India is looking at a “recalibration” of its bilateral ties with Sri Lanka as China is gaining massive inroads in the Indian Ocean island nation, ThePrint reported today (14). Colombo had last month decided to go ahead with the controversial $1.4 billion special economic zone (SEZ) project, the Colombo Port City project, funded by Beijing. Last month, the Sri Lankan parliament passed a controversial bill — the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill — which will establish a Colombo Port City Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the Colombo Port City Economic Commission (CPCEC). The bill was passed despite stiff resistance from opposition parties and concerns that the Colombo Port City could turn into a ‘Chinese province’ inside Sri Lanka. Ties between India and Sri Lanka began plummeting in February when Colombo scrapped the strategically important East Container Terminal at Colombo port, which was a tripartite pact with Japan.

Suspect arrested for theft of rice from a supermarket
A suspect wanted in connection with the theft of rice worth Rs. The suspect was arrested yesterday (13) in possession of 4 grams and 100 milligrams of heroin during a police raid near the Mount Lavinia Railway Station. He was later interrogated and it was revealed that he had stolen rice. A suspect and a woman were arrested along with 8 other bags of rice in two shops for selling stolen rice. Security on high alert in Tamil Nadu after receiving infiltration threats from Sri Lanka - report
The Tamil Nadu state police and Central intelligence agencies have stepped up vigil after threats of an armed group trying to infiltrate from Sri Lanka were received, Indian media reports said.
