Talks with Pavithra on allowance hike failBy Dinitha RathnayakeMembers of the non-medical health trade unions are to conduct a five hour strike at island-wide hospitals today (11) following the failure of talks held with Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi regarding an increase in the allowance of non-medical health staff. The strike will be against the Health Ministry’s purported duplicitous policy of increasing only the allowances of medical health staff, specifically doctors, and recommending the provision of an additional service allowance only to medical staff. “Our trade union action is against the attempt to divide the commitment of the entire health staff and over neglecting the commitment of the non medical health staff by the medical administration in collaboration with Wanniarachchi. The health authorities are only concerned about the medical staff and their family members. “There are around 150,000 health staff and the Health Ministry has to treat them equally without trying to create divisions between the service categories.

Quality, pricing checked as mobile sales growSalt shortage rumour mongers warnedBy Buddhika SamaraweeraThe Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has commenced conducting frequent raids to inspect whether the goods that are being sold by door-to-door mobile traders meet necessary quality standards and are being sold at the stipulated prices. Due to the travel restrictions that have been presently imposed to control the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, mobile sales activities are on the rise, and the CAA’s regional offices are currently working on looking into the mobile sales activities islandwide. “The CAA is conducting raids to investigate whether such traders are working in a way that is unfair to the consumers, and we are also constantly looking at the quality of the products that they sell,” CAA Raids Division Director Asela Bandara told The Morning, when contacted. Accordingly, the regional offices of the CAA have taken steps to conduct raids covering the Districts of Gampaha, Colombo, Puttalam, Ampara, Ratnapura, and Monaragala. He added that therefore, legal action would be taken against those who cause unnecessary salt shortages in the market and thereby inconvenience consumers.

In a typical home network—one where you’re accessing the internet from your cable modem, which is connected to your badass wifi router—you have both an external IP address and an internal IP address. In simple terms, an external IP address allows devices around the internet to find you. The external IP address, in this case, would be the company’s phone number. How to find your internal IP addressGetting your internal IP address is slightly more complicated than clicking on a hyperlink, but it’s not that tough. Look for the line that reads “IPv4 Address.” The number across from that text is your local IP address.

New Act to eliminate Covid-19 judicial delaysBy Pamodi WaravitaA new Bill that was presented to Parliament on 8 June will be enacted within this month to provide temporary provisions to facilitate Court proceedings despite the spread of Covid-19 in the country or the prevalence of travel restrictions. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the normal functioning of courts has been disrupted since 16 March 2020. Meanwhile, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) on Tuesday (8) suggested that even if the travel restrictions are extended beyond 14 June, the court proceedings should continue. The BASL also requested that full use be made of virtual platforms as a means by which the Courts of Justice could be made functional beyond the present levels. For that purpose, the BASL requested the JSC to issue guidelines or rules, similar to the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal Rules in respect of digital hearings.

“The presidential directive will not be achieved by using agronomists and professionals who are trained and practiced in only using chemical fertilisers and pesticides. In his presentation, he said organic agriculture is described as a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems, and people. “That is how and why organic agriculture helps move towards sustainability without losing any crop. Chemical fertilisers actually create more pests.”She noted that studies have been conducted on the correlation between chemical fertilisers and pests, and she claimed that the reduction of the genetic base from which new varieties are developed also contributes to pests’ vulnerability. Then in the middle of the last Century, Sri Lanka adapted the Green Revolution in favour of high-yielding farms.

Health Ministry to probe/mitigate vaccination cock-upsBy Buddhika Samaraweera and Dinitha RathnayakeThe Ministry of Health has attributed the numerous irregularities seen in the national vaccination drive so far, such as the lack of adherence to priority lists, to the high demand for vaccines and the limited supply of them. “Problems that have been reported with regard to the anti Covid-19 vaccines have not been reported in the case of vaccines for other diseases. The short supply of anti-Covid-19 vaccines and the increasing demand for them have led to these irregularities,” he added. The Health Ministry has launched an investigation into the irregularities during this vaccination program in Galle. The Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana had also raised the matter in Parliament.

At the same time, steps must also be taken to vaccinate all those suffering from non-communicable diseases, the President instructed. He said that the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) has developed special software to formalize the vaccination process and to collect the data of all vaccinated persons.
