Sri Lanka – China Friendship Association (SLCFA) today stated that it highly appreciates the friendship of the Government of the People’s Republic of China for assisting Sri Lanka in this time of need, and that the pandemic has brought the two nations together. “China has always been a friend to Sri Lanka and the pandemic has brought the two nations closer. “The third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic is having a devastating impact on Sri Lanka and vaccination is the key for the country to return to normal in the long term. At a time when Sri Lankan efforts to secure vaccines from the West failed, China has stepped up by donating vaccines. China has also encouraged Sri Lanka to explore the possibility of producing the vaccine in the country,” they said.

Three air force personnel arrested over extortion attempt
June 8, 2021 09:53 amThree Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) personnel have been arrested for attempting to extort Rs. 100,000 from two individuals travelling in a three-wheeler. According to Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana, the incident has taken place in the area of Kalpitiya on June 06. The suspects were taken into custody following a probe carried out by the Kalpitiya Police into the incident. The arrestees are expected to be produced before the court today (June 08) for an identity parade.

Temporary increase in rainfall today and tomorrow
A temporary increase in rainfall is expected in the southwestern areas today (08) and tomorrow (09). The Meteorological Department states that showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North Western provinces as well as in the Galle, Matara, Nuwara Eliya and Kandy districts. Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in the Uva and Eastern Provinces during the evening or night. Heavy showers of more than 100 mm will occur at some places in the Galle, Matara, Kalutara and Ratnapura districts. Winds will increase at times in the western slopes of the Central Hills, North, North Central and North Western Provinces and in the Hambantota and Trincomalee Districts.

Visiting French Navy personnel to visit Yala Park today (08)
COLOMBO (News 1st): The group of French Naval personnel who arrived in Sri Lanka on Sunday (Jun. 07), will engage in a tour of the Yala National Park today (8). Accordingly, 101 members of the French Navy are scheduled to visit the Yala National Park; 86 will visit the Udawalawe National Park, and 235 will engage on a tour of the Habarana area. The Department of Wildlife has announced that the Yala National Park will be opened Monday (08) for the visit of the French Navy personnel, which will be conducted under the bio-bubble concept. All tours of the visiting French Navy personnel will be carried out with the intervention of the Ministry of Tourism.

Ltd., the plaintiff in this action and the “largest footwear retailer” in Sri Lanka famed for the brands DSI, DSI Supersport, DSI Beach, BEAT, DSI, USofto, AVI, Samsons, Petalz, Melissa, Jessica, Picasso, Tamik, Nirogi, and Care +, recently filed action for violation of its rights as the registered owner of the trademark “BEAT” against the defendant for the illegal manufacturing and selling of lookalike “NEAT” products. Realme slipped up and accidentally revealed the European price for the Realme GT 5G. Okay, so that’s pricier than initially hoped, but this will still make the GT the cheapest Snapdragon 888-powered smartphone in Europe. In order to invite investors on a BOT mechanism, we would have to amend the CPC Act,” Gammanpila further said.

The politics of language, the language of politics
What should be opposed is the decline of the two major national official languages, i.e. It is said that after declaring the Sinhala language as the national official language in 1956, late Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike expressed confidence that the Sinhala language would become an international language and that even foreigners would have to learn the Sinhala language to deal with Sri Lankans. Today, Japan, for example, has very little need of the English language because its economy depends on other countries’ economies to a very minimal level. In the said case, Sri Lanka opted to prioritise the national official languages without understanding the role it plays in a country’s economy and development.

47 more COVID-19 deaths pushes toll to 1,789
The Director-General of Health Services confirmed that Sri Lanka has reported 47 more deaths related to the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday (June 07). As per the Department of Government Information, the reported deaths had occurred between May 17 and June 07. They are identified as residents of Elpitiya, Wathugahamulla, Dankotuwa, Marawila, Walapane, Dedigamuwa, Waththala, Matara, Hatton, Galagedara, Wellampitiya, Uragaha, Horana, Gonapola – North, Paragasthota, Gonapola, Dehiwala, Colombo 09, Thlawakele, Nuwara Eliya, Trincomalee, Alawwa, Negombo, Galle, Kalutara, Darga Town, Angoda, Naththandiya, Walahapitiya, Haburugala, Moronthuduwa –Panadura, Maho, Polgahawela, Ibbagamuwa, Kandy, Bulathsinghala, Akurana, Dehiaththakandiya, Poogoda, Dompe and Veyangoda. Accordingly, the total number of deaths due to Covid-19 infection in Sri Lanka has risen to 1,789.
