Suspect arrested for obstructing duties of PHI in Mahiyanganaya

Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana stated that the suspect was arrested on a charge of criminal coercion. The suspect was produced before the Mahiyanganaya Magistrate’s Court and remanded till July 9. An investigation by the Mahiyanganaya Police has revealed that the person had obstructed the search for the closest associates of a Covid infected monk in the area.

Genetic analysis research on Covid variants to commence from today
Genetic analysis research on Covid varieties that have spread in the country is scheduled to commence from today (28). However, the results of the research will be released within seven days, said Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, Director, Institute of Allergy and Immunology and Cell Biology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Several infected delta species have been identified in Sri Lanka which are currently spreading rapidly in India. Dr. Chandima Jeewandara further stated that the Delta variety is spreading rapidly in those identified areas. The Delta variety is twice as prevalent as the Alpha variety, and it is possible to find out how it spreads throughout the country.

Miami condo collapse death toll rises to at least nine
The official death toll for the Miami condo collapse rose to nine on Sunday after emergency workers found four more bodies - as rescuers dug a trench through the rubble in a bid to find survivors. STACIE DAWN FANG Stacie Dawn Fang, 54, was with her son Jonah Handler, a teenager, when the building collapsed. Condo association attorney Kenneth Direktor told the Times the repairs 'were just about to get started' when the building collapsed. Miami Dade Fire Rescue posted a warning to residents on Friday night about 'smoky conditions' after the building collapse. He lived with his wife Maria Bonnefoy in the part of the condo building that has been reduced to rubble, she said.

Hammer thrower Gwen Berry turned away from the American flag on Saturday while on the podium for a medal ceremony at the U.S. Olympic trials, saying it was 'disrespectful' to play the national anthem while she took a bronze medal. While the anthem played at the trials in Eugene, Oregon, Berry placed her left hand on her hip and shuffled her feet. 'We didn't wait until the athletes were on the podium for the hammer throw awards,' spokeswoman Susan Hazzard said in a statement. 'We're thrilled with the women's hammer throw team that selected themselves for the Games,' added Hazzard. The women's hammer throw starts August 1 in Tokyo.

Covid infections increase 60.2 per cent to 14,876 today
Covid cases continued to rise today, breaching more than 10,000 cases for the seventh day in a row. Department of health bosses posted another 14,876 cases today, increasing 60.2 per cent on last Sunday's figure of 9,284, while patients in hospital due to the virus soared 7% in a week to 227, from 211. Some 158,307 people received their second dose, meaning 32.2million people are now fully vaccinated — 61.6 per cent of the adult population. It comes after BBC news presenter Andrew Marr today revealed he contracted Covid last week despite having been fully jabbed. Meanwhile, the two women behind the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine said they do not believe any Covid variant can fully escape the jab.

Sri Lanka to receive Moderna, Pfizer, and Sinovac jabs
The World Health Organization (WHO) confirms granting 01 million doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to Sri Lanka. This will be granted under the COVAX facility of the WHO, State Minister of Production, Supply, and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Prof. Channa Jayasumana stated. Accordingly, Sri Lanka will receive doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines manufactured in the USA and the Sinovac vaccine produced in China will be available to Sri Lanka. The State Minister says that steps are being taken to launch the Sinovac vaccine as a final product in Sri Lanka. This is not a vaccine production from the beginning.
