Sri Lankan appointed to US President’s Commission
Dr. George E. Gabriel has been appointed by US President Joe Biden to the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships. Dr. Gabriel is originally from Sri Lanka and studied at the University of Kelaniya before immigrating to the United States. “His focus has been on student success in community colleges with the specific goal to narrow achievement gaps in student outcomes by implementing innovative practices,” a White House release said. Inconsistent information paves way for fake news: Lawyer Suren Fernando
When Government Officials continue to share inconsistent information with the public regarding a situation, this creates confusion and in turn, paves the way for the spread of fake news, Attorney-at-Law Suren Fernando told The Morning today (10). “The Constitution of this country, which is the highest law of the land, recognises freedom of speech. However, he noted that political expression which does not lead to violence and discrimination is not criminalised. “In this particular example, the Court explained that speech or dissent against the government is recognised by the constitution and therefore, it must be permitted,” Fernando stated. Fernando also addressed the fact that what falls under the definition of “fake news” is also not defined.

Over 1 million people given first dose of Sinopharm vaccine so far
The Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine has been rolled out among more than 1 million people in Sri Lanka, the Epidemiology Unit says. Its cumulative total showed that as many as 1,099,092 individuals have received the first dose of the Sinopharm vaccine so far. Sri Lanka ramped up coronavirus vaccination upon the receipt of 2 million doses of Sinopharm vaccine this week. Sri Lanka also received a donation of 500,000 doses of the China-manufactured vaccine on May 26. Sinopharm coronavirus vaccine, also known as BBIBP-CorV, is produced by China National Biotec Group (CNBG) – a subsidiary of China National Pharmaceutical Group Corporation (SINOPHARM).

2,142 new cases of Covid-19 reported in Sri Lanka
June 10, 2021 06:53 pmThe Ministry of Health reports that another 2,142 persons have tested positive for coronavirus today (June 10). All new cases are associated with the New Year Covid-19 cluster. This brings the total number of COVID-19 cases confirmed in the country thus far to 215,538. Presently 33,201 infected patients are being treated at hospitals and treatment centers across the island. Meanwhile, the number of total recoveries has reached 180,427.

OPA puts forward exit strategy for travel restrictions
The Organisation of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka (OPA) in a statement released today (10), put forward a series of recommendations in order to execute a proper exit strategy for the ongoing travel restrictions. Accordingly, the Organisation has made the following observations –Lack of adherence to preventive measure when restrictions were relaxedRelaxed and complacent attitude towards Covid prevention measures across all levels, despite advice from health authoritiesIncreasing number of deaths and casesLikelihood of numbers increasing which will exceed capacity of the health systemDeviation from WHO priority road map for vaccination processesWith these observations in mind, the Organisation has put forward the following recommendations –Continue restriction of mobility in heavily affected areas while maintaining essential economic and service activitiesGovernment could maintain and encourage the private sector to join and maintain supply chains for provision of essential services. OPA is in the best position to provide such recommendations as done in the past. Consider the usage of epidemiological predictions, forecasting and mapping to plan preventive and management strategiesRevise patient admission and discharge criteria considering limited resources available for prioritized admission process to ensure early detection and management of those who are at high riskReal time data and rational use of IT for contact tracing and surveillance as there is a backlog in receiving informationIsolate if necessary (as a bubble or similar arrangement ), affected economic centres such as FTZs and ports of entry while maintaining economic process, supply chains, and essential services.
