The U.S. is not going to meet President Joe Biden's July 4 goal of having 70 percent of adults with at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose. The Health Ministry says 241 more people have tested positive for COVID-19 today (July 03) as the daily count of positive cases dropped to 1,251. Sri Lanka had confirmed more than 1,700 coronavirus infections yesterday and a little over 1,800 on the day before. According to the Government Information Department, all new cases reported today have been associated with the New Year cluster, which has recorded a total of 256,417 virus infections since mid-April this year. The new development brings Sri Lanka’s confirmed coronavirus cases tally to 264,046. Official data showed that as many as 231,394 patients who were infected with the virus have regained health so far.

Following a protest which was staged in Boralanda, Bandarawela on Thursday (01), Sri Lanka police has stated that five people have been arrested for violating the quarantine rules and regulations by way of their participation. The suspects, who were produced before the Welimada Court, were enlarged on a Rs. 100,000/- personal bail each. Accordingly, the Police has also requested to arrest more suspects involved, however, the court ruled that an order is not necessary to conduct more arrests. Sri Lanka Police has since launched investigations to arrest Ex-Uva Provincial Council member of the JVP Samantha Vidyaratne, and National Organizer of the All Ceylon Farmers Federation Namal Karunaratne.

‘Muslim Aid Sri Lanka’ organization donated a consignment of medical equipment worth nearly Rs 30 million for the treatment of COVID-19 patients. The donation was handed over to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Temple Trees yesterday (July 02). The consignment includes a stock of medical equipment including 3 ventilators for adults and children, 4 oxygen therapy equipment, and 3,000 PPE kits. The project is implemented in collaboration with ‘Americares’ organization in the United States and Muslim Aid’s Head Quarters in the United Kingdom. The event was attended by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena and Justice Minister Ali Sabry.

Sri Lanka has reported 14 new coronavirus infections of the Delta variant, Deputy Director of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said. Speaking at a press conference today (July 03) Dr. Herath said that there is a risk of Delta COVID-19 clusters emerging in the country. He says that there can be many persons who have contracted Delta variant as the infection is not visible to the naked eye. This is a complex process.”On an inquiry regarding the report of the Sri Jayawardenapura University research, Dr. Hemantha said that they work according to the samples received. He said that they have received samples of 05 confirmed to have been infected.
