The Director-General of Health Services confirmed that Sri Lanka has reported 40 more deaths related to the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday (June 05). As per the Department of Government Information, the reported deaths had occurred between May 21 and June 05. They are identified as residents of Hasalaka, Mawanella, Eravur 02, Kurunegala, Galle, Haliela, Batapola, Dikoya, Dangedara, Imaduwa, Atakalampanna, Kelaniya, Yakkala, Kinniya, Colombo 10, Maggona, Hikkaduwa, Menikhinna, Balangoda, Batticaloa, Polgampola, Dodangoda, Nuwara Eliya, Maskeliya, Bogawanthalawa, Kandy, Galagedara, Colombo 09, Mathugama, Beruwala, Kalutara and Nugegoda. Accordingly, the total number of deaths due to Covid-19 infection in Sri Lanka has risen to 1,696.

The Ministry of Health says 1,851 more COVID-19 patients were discharged from medical care within the last 24 hours as they have returned to health. This brings the total number of coronavirus recoveries in the country to 166,132. Majority of the latest recoveries were reported from Punanai Treatment Centre (197) and Bingiriya Treatment Centre (117). Sri Lanka has so far reported 201,534 positive cases of COVID-19 and a total of 33,746 infected patients are still being treated at designated hospitals and treatment centres. The death toll from the outbreak of the virus meanwhile stands at 1,656.

The President made these remarks addressing the Agroecology Event at the 48th Session of the United Nations Committee on World Food Security, on Saturday (04) via video technology. The Committee on Food Security (CFS), while applauding the President’s decision to completely eliminate the use of chemical fertilizers, invited President Rajapaksa to its annual conference to deliver a special lecture, said the President’s Media Division. President Rajapaksa also said that the Government’s decision to ban imports of artificial fertilizers and agrochemicals enabled a long-needed national transition to a healthier and more ecologically sound system of organic agriculture. Sri Lanka Police has arrested 975 individuals on Friday (June 05) for violating quarantine regulations such as wearing face masks and maintaining social distancing in public places, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said. A total of 22,950 arrests have been made in connection with the same offences since the 30th of October 2020. Reportedly, 147 of the arrests were made by Matale Police, 80 by Nikaweratiya Police and 75 others by Kandy Police. Meanwhile, 139 vehicles attempting to cross the provincial borders have been identified by the police at 14 entry and exit points of the Western Province. He revealed that the highest number of vehicles – a total of 16,282 – entering the Colombo city were that of employees of financial institutions.
