BMA readies 255 'cooling' locations

BMA readies 255 'cooling' locationsThe Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will open 255 air-conditioned "cooling centres" across the capital from mid-March to help residents cope with rising temperatures during the peak summer period. Pornphrom Vikitsreth, an adviser to the Bangkok governor and a BMA sustainability adviser, said the "BKK Cooling Centres" will be available in all 50 districts, with a focus on protecting vulnerable groups from heat-related illnesses and heatstroke. The centres will be located at the 50 district offices, 69 public health centres, 51 BMA-run schools, 10 vocational training schools and 75 recreation centres and libraries. They will operate daily from 10am to 3pm throughout March and April, when accumulated heat levels are typically at their highest. Last year, 379 heat-risk locations were identified, mainly open areas such as construction sites and markets.
