Bugging devices in imports risk security

Most foreign origin network infrastructure products contain trapdoors and bugs, says security expert. A senior Indian Navy Officer on Thursday warned that securing network infrastructure devices (NIDs) from foreign countries will put the country’s cyber security at risk as the vendors pack them with trapdoors and bugs. Delivering a talk on ‘Information warfare and Cyber Defence’, Rear Admiral Rahul Sharawat, director general of Weapons Electronics and Systems Engineering Establishment said most of the foreign origin network infrastructure products contain trapdoors and bugs leaving the cyber security vulnerable. Sharawat said in India many deficits exists in the area of cyber security which also include lack of testing, certification facilities, absence of human resource in cyber defence and proper legal frame work. “There is a need to manufacture our own network infrastructure devices and also develop infrastructure for testing and certification to detect hidden trapdoors and bugs which our adversaries might hide in the products,” Sharawat said.
