Do circumstances serendipitously create leaders or do people choose to rise up in the face of circumstances and lead? From an organizational leadership perspective, I believe that successful leaders choose that path and are aware that it is a choice. If we are not succeeding in a smaller leadership role, what makes us think we will succeed with a larger span of control? It is all too common that people are cast into leadership roles without this fundamental awareness. Choosing to lead is more than just about choosing a leadership role.
