Ikea has been looking across its businesses for new profit centers, and recently realized that its food operations might be an opportunity. Ikea cafes have been a part of its stores in 1958, a year after the first Ikea opened in Sweden. The company's founder, Ingvar Kamprad, reasoned that company sales might fare better if it took care of hangry customers.
