Let's save Chiang Rai's wetlandsA wetland forest at the Boon Rueang community in Chiang Rai province has long served as a 'kitchen supermarket' for locals. Wiang Nong Lom is an unusually valuable wetland covering over 14,000 rai (22.5 square kilometres). Wiang Nong Lom supports 286 plant species, 143 fish species and over 290 bird species, including threatened ones. The approval process for the Wiang Nong Lom reservoir project lacked genuine community involvement. Government stakeholders -- and all of us as concerned citizens -- must recognise the vital role that wetlands like Wiang Nong Lom play in Thailand's natural heritage.
